The Abia Poly cut off mark for Mechanical Engineering Technology is 100 in the UTME, JAMB’s national minimum for polytechnics for 2026/2027. Abia State Polytechnic, now Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, has not published a separate cut-off for ND Mechanical Engineering. Some blogs mention “120 and above” for the school, but none of them cites a school notice.
2027/2028 update: Abia Poly cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Before you plan around this course, check that it is admitting. Mechanical Engineering Technology is on JAMB’s course list for Abia State Polytechnic, but it was not on the course list in the school’s 2025/2026 advert as reprinted by Myschool. Below you will find what that means for you, plus the verified figures, a safe target score (my advice), the JAMB subjects, O’level rules, screening, a worked example and the CAPS steps.
Abia Poly Mechanical Engineering Technology cut off mark at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB minimum UTME score for polytechnics | 100 | Official (JAMB 2026 policy meeting, reported by NAN on 11 May 2026) |
| Abia Poly departmental cut-off for Mechanical Engineering | Not published | No official figure found for 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 |
| “120 and above” figure seen on blogs | 120 | Unofficial (o3schools, 3 February 2026; no school notice cited) |
| Programme level | National Diploma (ND), full time | ND entry is through the UTME and JAMB CAPS |
| School | School of Engineering Technology | Wikipedia, citing the JAMB brochure |
| Name on JAMB’s course list | Mechanical Engineering Technology | Myschool reprint of the JAMB brochure list for Abia State Polytechnic |
| UTME subjects | English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics (brochure allows Technical Drawing in place of Physics) | JAMB polytechnic brochure as reprinted by Myschool; no Abia Poly remark |
| Screening fee and dates | Not published officially | Check the polytechnic portal |
| Admission deadline set by JAMB | 31 December 2026 for polytechnics | Official (NAN, 11 May 2026) |
Mechanical Engineering Technology is on the Myschool reprint of JAMB’s course list for Abia State Polytechnic, but it was missing from the course list in the polytechnic’s 2025/2026 ND/HND advert reprinted by Myschool. That may be an omission in the advert, or the department may not have admitted that year. Confirm with the school that it is admitting before you pay for screening.
Abia Poly Mechanical Engineering cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics | Official |
| 2026/2027 | 120 | “Scored up to 120 and above” on a blog’s Abia Poly screening post | Unofficial |
| 2025/2026 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics | Official (reported by Nairametrics, 8 July 2025) |
| Any year | None | Abia Poly cut-off for Mechanical Engineering specifically | Never published in any source I found |
JAMB kept the polytechnic minimum at 100 in both 2025 and 2026, and its 2026 policy meeting said the approved minimums must be strictly followed. A polytechnic is free to admit above that line, and engineering and design courses often fill with higher scores, but Abia Poly has never announced a figure for Mechanical Engineering. If a website quotes an exact Abia Poly Mechanical Engineering cut-off such as 140 or 150, ask it for the school notice behind the number.
Safe target score for Mechanical Engineering at Abia Poly (my advice)
This table is my judgement as an admissions adviser, based on how ND engineering and technology courses fill in South East polytechnics. It is not an Abia Poly rule, and the school has not published merit lists with scores.
| Your UTME score | My read for ND Mechanical Engineering at Abia Poly |
|---|---|
| Below 100 | Not eligible for any ND course this session |
| 100 to 119 | Eligible, but weak for an engineering or technology course |
| 120 to 139 | Possible, and above the figure blogs quote |
| 140 to 159 | Reasonable, and a good position for Mechanical |
| 160 to 179 | Competitive |
| 180 and above | Strong. You should not lose a place on score alone. |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 150, with credits in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Mechanical usually draws fewer applicants than Computer or Electrical Engineering in South East polytechnics, so my target is a little lower, but the uncertainty about intake means a strong score is your best protection.
Catchment and state of origin
Abia Poly is owned by the Abia State Government, but it has not published a catchment list or a quota split for 2026/2027. It admits candidates from every state. I would not count on any indigene advantage unless the school’s own notice mentions one.
Abia Poly Mechanical Engineering subject combination and O’level requirements
| Requirement | ND Mechanical Engineering |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, with Technical Drawing allowed in place of Physics (“Physics/Technical Drawing” in the brochure) |
| O’level | Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry plus any one of Biology/Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Basic Electronics/Basic Electricity, Auto Mechanics, Metal Work, Woodwork, Further Mathematics, Geography and Economics/Commerce |
| English Language | Required as one of the five credits |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO and NABTEB are the usual ones; the 2025/2026 advert names SSCE and NECO |
| Sittings | Not stated by Abia Poly; two sittings is the common polytechnic limit |
| Abia Poly remark in the brochure | None |
| Interview, drawing test or practical | None published |
The brochure writes the UTME rule as Mathematics, Chemistry and “Physics/Technical Drawing”. In plain terms, Technical Drawing can stand in for Physics. I would still register Physics if you can, because the O’level rule asks for a Physics credit anyway and mechanics in year one is applied Physics. There is no Abia State Polytechnic remark on the page.
At O’level you need four fixed credits (English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry) and one more relevant credit. Technical Drawing, Metal Work, Auto Mechanics or Further Mathematics are the best fits for this course.
The 2025/2026 advert reprint says candidates need “at least four (4) Passes” at SSCE or NECO, and then the text is cut off. That line does not match the five credits in JAMB’s brochure. Plan for five credits, with Mathematics, Physics and English Language among them. That is the national ND pattern, and it keeps every option open, including a later move to HND.
Direct Entry and the HND route
There is no Direct Entry into the first year of an ND, and JAMB’s brochure lists no Direct Entry requirement for this course. ND Mechanical Engineering admission goes through the UTME and CAPS. After the ND and a year of industrial attachment, you can apply for HND Mechanical Engineering directly to the polytechnic, outside CAPS, if the school runs the HND in that session.
For HND admission, a blog (schoolings.org, page updated 12 March 2026) reprinted a notice it credits to the polytechnic’s management: a ₦5,000 form, five O’level credits, an ND at Lower Credit or above, a one-year industrial attachment, and a screening test with no make-up date. I have not seen the original notice, so treat those details as unconfirmed. Our Abia Poly HND admission requirements page covers that route.
How Abia Poly screening works
I could not find an official 2026/2027 screening notice from Abia Poly. Its website did not load for me, and Myschool, which usually reprints polytechnic adverts, has none for this session. What follows comes from the 2025/2026 advert reprinted by Myschool and from a blog description of the 2026/2027 form, so check every detail on the portal before you pay.
| Detail | What is known | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Who can apply | Candidates who chose Abia State Polytechnic in the UTME and scored at least the minimum | JAMB rule; blog says first choice |
| Minimum UTME score | 100 (JAMB); some blogs say 120 | 100 official; 120 unofficial |
| Eligibility line in 2025/2026 advert | “At least four (4) Passes at SSCE/NECO level” (the reprint cuts off after this) | Myschool reprint, 26 July 2025 |
| Payment | Generate an invoice on the portal and pay at a bank | Blog (o3schools, 3 February 2026) |
| After payment | Complete the form, upload documents, print the acknowledgement and an exam slip | Blog; suggests a screening test |
| Fee | Not published | Unknown |
| Aggregate formula | Not published | Unknown |
The exam slip in the blog description points to a written or computer test. Abia Poly has not said what the test covers or how it weighs it against your UTME score. For an engineering or technology course, I would revise the same Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry you wrote in the UTME, plus English, because that is what polytechnic screening tests usually draw on.
Worked example for an ND Mechanical Engineering applicant
Abia Poly has not published an aggregate formula, so start with the gap between your UTME score, the 100 minimum and a safe target. Take Chidi, who scored 143 and has credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Technical Drawing from one sitting.
- Eligibility: 143 minus 100 = 43. He is above JAMB’s minimum.
- Against the blog figure: 143 minus 120 = 23. He clears 120 too.
- Against my safe target: 143 minus 150 = minus 7. He is a little below my target, so a good screening score matters.
- Programme check: before paying, he confirms that Mechanical Engineering Technology is on the school’s 2027/2028 course list.
To illustrate a combined ranking (Abia Poly has not published its formula), take the UTME score divided by 8 plus a screening score out of 50. Chidi’s 143 gives 17.9; with 34 in screening he totals 51.9, while a candidate with 160 in the UTME and 26 in screening totals 46. The method is only an example, but it shows that the screening can move you up or down a list.
Your chances of getting Mechanical Engineering at Abia Poly
- Competition is usually lighter than for Computer or Electrical Engineering, so a score in the 140s can be enough for a fair chance.
- The bigger risk for this course is intake: confirm that the department is admitting in your session.
- Clean credits in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry on CAPS remove the most common reason for a rejected offer.
- Polytechnic admission for 2026/2027 ran until JAMB’s 31 December 2026 deadline, so keep checking CAPS after the first list.
If Mechanical is not admitting, Welding and Fabrication Engineering Technology and Civil Engineering Technology are the closest alternatives at the same school. Both use the same science base, and you can move with a JAMB change of course if the UTME subjects match.
How to apply for Mechanical Engineering at Abia Poly, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick Mechanical Engineering Technology with Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. JAMB still lists the school as Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, even though it was renamed Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in November 2024.
- Fix your choice if needed: if Abia Poly was not your choice, do a JAMB change of institution before screening opens. To move into this course from another one, see JAMB change of course.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB accredited centre. JAMB cannot offer you admission while CAPS shows no O’level result.
- Fill the screening form: on the Abia Poly applicant portal (portal.abiastatepolytechnic.edu.ng), generate the invoice, pay, complete the form, upload your documents, and print the acknowledgement and exam slip.
- Sit the screening: go with your slip, UTME result slip and O’level results if a test is held.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: Abia Poly has not published its acceptance fee in any official source I reached. Pay only through an invoice generated on the school portal, then complete clearance at the school.
Warning
Admission into Abia Poly comes through JAMB CAPS. If anyone offers you a “special list” slot for money, walk away. A genuine offer appears on your CAPS page, and genuine school payments are made through a portal invoice in your name.
If you still need to sit the UTME, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and revise with our JAMB Chemistry syllabus. When results come out, see how to check your JAMB result.
Studying Mechanical Engineering Technology at Abia Poly
ND Mechanical Engineering Technology sits in the polytechnic’s School of Engineering Technology at the Aba campus. Aba is a manufacturing and trading town with many small fabrication, auto and machine shops, which gives mechanical students plenty of places to see the work done for real.
What you study
- Engineering drawing and computer aided drawing
- Workshop technology: fitting, machining, welding and foundry basics
- Applied mechanics and strength of materials
- Thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
- Engineering materials and metallurgy
- Machine tools, maintenance and plant operation
- Basic electrical engineering and engineering mathematics
- Communication in English and general studies courses
Much of the ND is spent in the workshop. You should be comfortable with standing at a lathe or bench for long sessions, wearing protective gear and working to measurements.
Duration and accreditation
Under the standard NBTE structure, the ND runs for two years full time. Students who want the HND then do a one-year industrial attachment (SIWES or IT) before applying, and the HND usually asks for an ND at Lower Credit or above. Abia Poly has not published a course-specific timetable, so treat this as the national pattern.
On accreditation, the history matters. In 2022 the NBTE withdrew Abia State Polytechnic’s accreditation, and reports said students were barred from NYSC mobilisation. The Abia State Government announced on 1 September 2022 that accreditation had been restored after it released ₦450 million and held talks with the NBTE. I could not confirm the current NBTE status of ND Mechanical Engineering itself, so ask the department, or check the NBTE’s list of accredited programmes, before you pay fees. Practising engineering technicians are regulated by COREN, so check its rules for ND and HND holders when you get to that stage.

Mistakes that cost Mechanical Engineering applicants a place at Abia Poly
- Not confirming intake: the course was missing from the 2025/2026 advert list; check before you pay.
- Treating 100 as a safe score: it is the minimum to apply, not a likely admission score.
- No credit in Chemistry: the O’level rule fixes English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
- O’level missing on CAPS: JAMB cannot process your admission without it.
- Searching for the new name only: JAMB and CAPS still show Abia State Polytechnic.
- Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: acceptance fee payment and clearance are separate steps.
Abia Poly Mechanical Engineering cut-off: frequently asked questions
Does Abia Poly still offer Mechanical Engineering Technology? It is on JAMB’s course list for Abia State Polytechnic, but it was not on the 2025/2026 advert list reprinted by Myschool. Ask the school or check the portal course list before paying for screening.
Can I use Technical Drawing instead of Physics for Mechanical at Abia Poly? The brochure allows Physics or Technical Drawing in the UTME, but the O’level rule still asks for a Physics credit. I would write Physics to keep things simple.
Is 130 enough for Mechanical Engineering at Abia Poly? It is enough to apply, as JAMB’s minimum is 100. It is below my safe target of 150, so do well in screening and keep your O’level clean on CAPS.
What can I do with ND Mechanical Engineering? You can work as a maintenance, plant or workshop technician, or set up in machining and repairs. After a year of industrial attachment you can apply for HND.
Sources and updates
The 100 minimum for polytechnics and the 31 December 2026 admission deadline come from the News Agency of Nigeria report of JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026). The 2025 figure of 100 is from Nairametrics (8 July 2025) and matching Blueprint and AllAfrica reports. The UTME and O’level requirements are from JAMB’s polytechnic brochure as reprinted by Myschool (ND Mechanical Engineering Technology brochure page), which has no Abia Poly remark. The course list is from the Myschool list of Abia State Polytechnic courses and Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic’s 2025/2026 ND/HND admission advert reprinted by Myschool (26 July 2025). The “120 and above” figure and the screening form steps are from o3schools (3 February 2026) and are unofficial. The HND details are from a schoolings.org reprint (12 March 2026) that I could not match to an original notice. The renaming to Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic on 7 November 2024 and the school’s location are from Wikipedia and news reports of the renaming. The 2022 accreditation withdrawal and restoration are from news reports and the Abia State Government (1 September 2022). Course content and careers describe the standard NBTE ND, not an Abia Poly handbook. The safe target scores and the worked example are my own advice. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated when Abia Poly publishes its 2027/2028 notice.
