Emory University scholarships for international students come through two routes. The first is the Emory University Scholar Programs, a merit competition you enter by ticking “Yes” on your Emory application. Its top award at Emory College, the Robert W. Woodruff Scholarship, pays full tuition, required fees, and on-campus housing and meals for up to eight semesters. The second is need-based aid, which Emory gives to “a select group” of international students each year if they apply under Regular Decision.
Neither route is guaranteed, and only the Woodruff level comes close to full funding. For fall 2027 entry, the scholar programme deadline is 1 November 2026 if you apply Early Decision I, or 15 November 2026 for Early Decision II and Regular Decision. Emory’s estimated cost for 2026-2027 is $97,948 a year before health insurance, so read the coverage details before you count on an award.
Key facts about Emory scholarships for international students
- University: Emory University, a private research university in Atlanta, Georgia. First-year students enter Emory College of Arts and Sciences on the Atlanta campus or Oxford College on the Oxford campus.
- Merit route: Emory University Scholar Programs, including the Emory College Woodruff Scholars, Oxford College Woodruff Scholars and Goizueta Scholars.
- Merit value: partial to full. The Emory College Woodruff Scholarship covers full tuition, required fees, on-campus room and meals.
- Need route: need-based aid for a limited number of international students; you must apply Regular Decision.
- Citizenship: international applicants can enter the Scholar Programs regardless of citizenship.
- Separate essay or form? No separate scholarship application. You answer “Yes” to the Scholar Programs question on the Emory application.
- Level: incoming first-year undergraduates only.
- Renewal: up to eight regular semesters (fall and spring) if you meet programme requirements.
- Tests: SAT and ACT are optional for fall 2027 applicants.
What the Woodruff Scholarship covers (and what it leaves out)
Many listings call Emory’s scholarships fully funded. Only the top Woodruff award comes close, and even it stops short of the full cost of attendance. Emory’s official 2026-2027 cost worksheet lets you see the gap.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Annual amount | Covered by Emory College Woodruff Scholarship? |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $70,300 | Yes |
| Required fees | $1,148 | Yes |
| Housing (on campus) | $13,222 | Yes |
| Food (meal plan) | $9,184 | Yes |
| Books | $1,286 | Not listed in the award |
| Travel | $1,100 | Not listed in the award |
| Personal expenses | $1,620 | Not listed in the award |
| Student health insurance | About $5,592 | Not listed in the award |
| Total cost of attendance (excluding insurance) | $97,948 |
So a Woodruff Scholar still needs roughly $9,600 a year for books, travel, personal costs and insurance, plus one-time charges such as the $495 orientation fee and the $375 International Student Welcome Fee. That is my calculation from Emory’s own figures. If you also have financial need and applied for aid, Emory says merit scholarships are awarded first and need-based grants can cover remaining need.
Woodruff Scholars also get advising, programming and the chance to apply for funding for unpaid internships, research and conference travel. Emory does not publish dollar amounts for those extras.
Other Scholar Programs awards
| Award | Where | Who it targets | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robert W. Woodruff Scholarship | Emory College | First-year students who show promise as agents of positive social change, any major | Full tuition, required fees, on-campus room and meals |
| Woodruff-MLK, Jr. Scholarship | Emory College | Same qualities, applicants from Metro Atlanta | Within the Woodruff programme |
| Woodruff Debate Scholarship | Emory College | Same qualities plus exceptional competitive policy debate | Within the Woodruff programme |
| Woodruff Music Scholarship | Emory College | Same qualities plus exceptional applied music | Within the Woodruff programme |
| Oxford College Woodruff Scholars | Oxford College | First-year students admitted to Oxford College | Partial to full (not itemised publicly) |
| Goizueta Scholars | Goizueta Business School | Exceptional first-year students with business interest | Partial to full (not itemised publicly) |
For international students from outside the Atlanta area, the main Woodruff Scholarship and the Goizueta and Oxford awards are the realistic targets. Emory does not publish how many awards it makes each year.
Emory need-based aid for international students
Emory meets full demonstrated need for domestic students and, from fall 2026, charges no tuition to eligible US families earning $200,000 or less (Emory Advantage Plus). Those programmes are for US citizens and permanent residents. International students fall under a separate, smaller pool.
Here is what Emory’s international aid page says:
- Need-based packages go to “a select group” of international students each year. Emory does not say it meets full need for international students.
- To be considered, you must apply under the Regular Decision plan.
- You must complete the CSS Profile and send your family’s tax returns or foreign equivalent through the College Board’s IDOC service, translated into English, converted to US dollars, with the exchange rate stated.
- If you do not receive need-based aid in your first year, you cannot get it later. Apply in year one if there is any chance you will need help.
- Emory does not cover currency changes or replace outside support you lose later.
The deadline for the CSS Profile and IDOC documents is listed as 10 February 2027 on Emory’s financial aid page for new students. Emory’s international aid page says 5 February and its Regular Decision page says 11 February. I would submit by 5 February 2027 so that every version of the deadline is met.
Emory does not describe its admission process as need-blind for international applicants, and the aid pool is limited, so apply to other universities as well. The financial certification you send with your application does not need to cover the full first year if you are applying for aid.
Emory scholarship and application deadlines for fall 2027
| Stage | Early Decision I | Early Decision II | Regular Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scholar Programs deadline | 1 November 2026 | 15 November 2026 | 15 November 2026 |
| Application deadline | 1 November 2026 | 1 January 2027 | 1 January 2027 |
| Financial aid documents (CSS Profile, IDOC) | 2 December 2026 | 6 January 2027 | 10 February 2027 (international) |
| Admission decision | By 15 December 2026 | By 15 February 2027 | By 1 April 2027 |
| Enrollment deposit | 15 January 2027 | 1 March 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
The trap here is that the Scholar Programs deadline for Regular Decision (15 November) comes six weeks before the Regular Decision application deadline (1 January). If you want scholarship consideration, your whole application has to be in by 15 November, not just started.
Need aid? Do not apply Early Decision
Emory considers international students for need-based aid only under Regular Decision. If you need aid, file a complete Regular Decision application by 15 November 2026 to be in both the Scholar Programs and the aid pool.
What happens after you apply
- Late November to January: Emory reviews Scholar Programs applications.
- By the end of February 2027: finalists are selected and notified.
- Late March 2027: finalists attend a multi-day Scholars Finalists Visit and awards are made. Finalists living in the US must attend; Emory covers the cost for students. Emory’s page does not set out the arrangement for finalists abroad, so ask the admission office if you are selected.
- April 2027: need-based aid decisions arrive with Regular Decision results.
- 1 May 2027: deposit deadline.
Emory admission requirements for international students
Academic records
Emory accepts all major curricula. It names the IB Diploma, AP and British A-Levels as widely recognised and publishes a country-by-country list of recognised national systems. You apply through the Common App or QuestBridge.
English proficiency
You can skip the English test if you have an SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 700 or more, an ACT English score of 30 or more, or your four most recent years of school were fully taught in English. Otherwise, send one of these:
| Test | Emory benchmark (not a strict cut-off) |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (0 to 120 scale) | About 100 |
| TOEFL iBT (1 to 6 scale, from 21 January 2026) | 5.5 or higher |
| IELTS | About 7.5 overall |
| Duolingo English Test | Typically above 130 for the most competitive applicants |
| TOEFL ITP | CEFR C1 |
Emory offers Duolingo fee waivers case by case; you cannot request one, and eligible applicants are contacted after applying.
Testing
SAT and ACT are optional for fall 2027. Emory superscores both if you send them.
Financial certification
Every international applicant sends a Documentation of Finances or a bank letter showing funds for all expenses. Aid applicants still send it, but it need not cover the whole first year.
Interview
An optional virtual interview through InitialView is available, and Emory strongly recommends it for applicants in Mainland China. It does not replace an English test.
How to apply for Emory scholarships: step by step
- Choose your college: Emory College, Oxford College, or both. Woodruff awards are made by college.
- Choose your plan: Early Decision I if you can pay without need-based aid and Emory is your clear first choice. Regular Decision if you need aid.
- Complete the Common App by the Scholar Programs date: 1 November 2026 (ED I) or 15 November 2026 (ED II or RD).
- Answer “Yes” to the Scholar Programs question: if you leave it blank, you are not considered.
- Send English scores, transcripts and the school report: make sure your counsellor knows about the earlier scholarship date.
- Upload financial certification: through the applicant portal.
- If you need aid: tick the financial aid question, file the CSS Profile (Emory code 5187) and upload tax documents to IDOC by 5 February 2027.
- Watch your portal: finalists hear by the end of February 2027.
Writing the application for the Scholar Programs
There is no separate scholarship essay. Your Common App essay, Emory’s supplemental answers, activities list and recommendations are all the selectors see. The Woodruff page describes its scholars as students motivated to be agents of positive social change. Show that with something you actually did.
Strong applications usually have:
- One sustained project or role with a clear result (a tutoring scheme you started and how many students it reached, a research project and what you found).
- Teacher letters that describe how you think in class, not a list of your grades.
- Activities written with numbers and outcomes instead of titles.
A short example of an opening that works: “In my second year at secondary school I started a Saturday maths class for six younger students in our compound; by the end of the year there were forty, and two of the original six now teach it.” It is concrete and leads straight into what you learned.
Common mistakes
- Missing the 15 November scholarship date because the Regular Decision deadline is 1 January.
- Forgetting to answer “Yes” to the Scholar Programs question.
- Applying Early Decision while needing aid. International need-based aid is Regular Decision only.
- Skipping the CSS Profile in year one, which rules out aid in later years.
- Assuming the Woodruff covers insurance and flights.
- Sending tax documents without English translation and US dollar conversion.

Who should apply, and who should not
Apply for the Scholar Programs if you have top grades, a record of leadership or service you can describe with real results, and can either pay most of Emory’s cost or qualify for need-based aid through Regular Decision.
Think carefully if your family cannot contribute anything and you are not a likely Woodruff Scholar. The international need-based pool is small and Emory does not promise to meet full need. Apply to a mix of universities, including some that meet full need for international students.
FAQ
Does Emory give full scholarships to international students?
Yes, but very few. The Emory College Woodruff Scholarship covers full tuition, fees, room and meals, though not books, travel, personal costs or health insurance. Need-based aid is available for a select group of international students.
Is there a separate application for Emory’s merit scholarships?
No. You answer “Yes” to the Scholar Programs question on the Emory application and submit everything by 1 November 2026 (Early Decision I) or 15 November 2026 (Early Decision II or Regular Decision).
Can international students apply Early Decision and still get aid at Emory?
You can apply Early Decision and be considered for merit scholarships, but international need-based aid requires Regular Decision. Apply Regular Decision if you need aid.
What is the Emory CSS Profile deadline for international students in 2027?
Emory’s new student aid page gives 10 February 2027 for international students. Its international aid page says 5 February, so file by 5 February 2027 to be safe.
