GOUNI Music Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 & Admission Requirements

GOUNI’s cut-off mark for Music is 150 and the form is free. See the UTME subjects, the Music credit, ABRSM or MUSON grade V or audition rule, Direct Entry, JUPEB, what you study and the NUC question.

The GOUNI Music cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME. Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu lists Music in its Faculty of Arts for 2026/2027 and sets 150 as the minimum JAMB score for every programme outside Medicine, Nursing and Law. That matches JAMB’s national minimum for universities, and GOUNI has not published any higher departmental figure for Music. The application form is free.

2027/2028 update: GOUNI cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Score is rarely what stops Music applicants. The harder part is the music qualification itself. GOUNI’s B.A. Music curriculum asks for a credit in Music at school level, a grade V certificate from ABRSM, MUSON or a similar body, or a pass in an audition set by the department. Most secondary schools in the South East do not offer Music at WAEC, so the audition route matters. This guide covers that, the UTME subjects, O’level, Direct Entry, how GOUNI decides and what the four years look like.

Safe target score for Music at GOUNI (my advice)

Music classes in Nigerian universities are small, and GOUNI decides each form within three working days. Your musical background is likely to weigh more than a few extra UTME marks. My suggested bands:

Your UTME scoreMy read for GOUNI Music
Below 150Not eligible through UTME; look at GOUNI’s JUPEB route
150 to 159Eligible if your music qualification or audition is in place
160 and aboveComfortable; UNN Music (160 to screen in 2026/2027) is also within reach

For a 2027 candidate I would aim for 160 and spend the rest of the year on music theory and an instrument or voice, because that is what an audition tests.

UTME subject combination and O’level for Music at GOUNI

There is no GOUNI remark on the JAMB brochure page for Music, so JAMB’s general rule applies to the UTME. For O’level, the rules on GOUNI’s own form page and its Music curriculum add detail.

RequirementMusic at GOUNI
JAMB course nameMusic (Godfrey Okoye University)
UTME subjectsUse of English, Music, one other Arts subject and any other subject
O’level, GOUNI form pageFive credits in the course’s subjects, including English Language and Mathematics
O’level, JAMB’s general ruleFive credits including Music and English Language
Music qualification, GOUNI curriculumCredit in Music, or ABRSM/MUSON grade V or higher, or a pass in a departmental audition or aptitude test
Direct Entry, GOUNI curriculumFive credits, two of them at A-level, with at least a credit in a Music diploma or NCE Music, plus three other credits
Direct Entry, JAMB general ruleTwo A-level passes including Music
DurationFour years (three for Direct Entry), per GOUNI’s curriculum

Choosing your UTME subjects

Music is one of JAMB’s UTME subjects, and the general rule makes it compulsory. A few universities, such as UNN, OAU and UNIPORT, accept any three subjects, but GOUNI has no such remark. I would write English, Music, Literature in English and CRS (or Government in place of CRS). That set fits JAMB’s rule and echoes GOUNI’s JUPEB combination for Music, which is Music, CRS, and Government or Literature in English.

If you cannot sit Music in the UTME, ask GOUNI’s admissions office in writing before you register. Do not assume a waiver that has not been published for GOUNI.

No Music at WAEC? The audition route

GOUNI’s curriculum gives three ways to show music ability at entry. Pick the one that fits you:

  • WAEC or NECO Music at credit: the simplest proof if your school offered it.
  • Graded certificate: grade V or above from ABRSM, MUSON or a comparable body. Many church musicians and MUSON students already have this.
  • Departmental audition or aptitude test: the curriculum says this normally includes playing an instrument or singing. GOUNI has not published audition dates, and the form page does not mention one, so ask the department when you apply.

To prepare for an audition, learn basic rudiments (scales, keys, time signatures, note values), pick one short piece you can play or sing cleanly, and practise sight-singing simple melodies. A church choir or band background helps a lot here.

O’level points to watch

  • Mathematics at credit: GOUNI’s form page asks every applicant for English and Mathematics credits.
  • Sittings: GOUNI has not stated a limit for UTME entry; its JUPEB page allows two sittings.
  • Awaiting result: allowed when applying, but your result must be on CAPS before GOUNI can propose you.

Direct Entry and JUPEB

A Music diploma or NCE Music holder with at least a credit, plus the O’level credits, can enter at 200 level for a three-year degree. GOUNI’s JUPEB programme is another way in, with Music, CRS, and Government or Literature in English as subjects. JUPEB takes nine to eleven months and the on-campus form costs ₦10,000.

How GOUNI screens Music applicants

GOUNI’s official admission form page describes an online application that is checked against your UTME score and O’level, with a decision sent to your e-mail. No written test is mentioned for Music or any other undergraduate course.

DetailWhat GOUNI published for 2026/2027
Where to applyThe admission form on the official GOUNI website (gouni.edu.ng)
Form fee for MusicFree (only Medicine and Surgery, Nursing and Law charge ₦5,000)
Minimum UTME score150
O’levelFive credits in the subjects the course requires, including English Language and Mathematics
Written testNone described on the form page
DecisionE-mailed within three working days of submitting the form
After an offerPay acceptance fee, tuition, ICT and other charges
Other routesDirect Entry, JUPEB, transfer and postgraduate
Aggregate formulaNot published

Because the decision goes to your e-mail, use an address you check every day and type it carefully, because a single wrong letter means the reply never reaches you.

For Music, I would expect the department to want evidence of your music qualification or to invite you for an audition before a final offer. This is my reading of the curriculum, since GOUNI has published no such procedure, so reply quickly to any e-mail asking you to come in.

Worked example (illustrative)

Take Somtochukwu, who scored 158 with English, Music, Literature in English and CRS. Her WAEC has C5 in English Language, C6 in Mathematics, B3 in CRS, C4 in Literature and B3 in Civic Education. Her school did not offer Music, but she plays keyboard in church.

  1. Score: 158 is 8 above GOUNI’s 150.
  2. UTME subjects: Music is present, so she meets JAMB’s rule.
  3. O’level: English and Mathematics at credit plus three more credits. She meets GOUNI’s form rule.
  4. Music qualification: no WAEC Music and no graded certificate, so she relies on the audition. She should ask the department for the audition date as soon as she submits the form.

Now take Ebuka, who scored 190 with English, Literature, Government and CRS. He has a MUSON grade V certificate, but he did not write Music in the UTME. His certificate solves the curriculum rule, yet the JAMB subject rule is still a problem, so he must get written confirmation from GOUNI before relying on this application.

Admission odds and advice

  • Low competition on scores: 150 with complete papers is usually enough.
  • The music proof decides: prepare your certificate or audition piece early.
  • First choice: GOUNI asks candidates who did not choose it first to change institution on JAMB.
  • Dates: JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, and GOUNI repeated it in its news post of 12 May 2026. That deadline runs until 30 November 2026, so a 2026 candidate still has a little time; a 2027 candidate should expect a similar window next year.

Who GOUNI Music suits

I would recommend it to choristers, church organists, band members and anyone who wants a career in music teaching, performance, production or music technology. GOUNI’s curriculum leans toward church music and music technology, with courses such as Igbo Catholic Hymns, Training in Church Musicianship, Orchestration with MIDI, and Mixing and Mastering Technology. If you want a larger department and can score 160, compare UNN Music too.

How to apply for Music at GOUNI, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: pick Godfrey Okoye University and the course “Music”, and write English, Music, one other Arts subject and one more subject.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited centre as soon as your WAEC or NECO result is out. GOUNI cannot propose you without it.
  4. Fix your choice if needed: if GOUNI was not your first choice, do a JAMB change of institution to GOUNI before you are proposed.
  5. Fill the GOUNI form: open the admission form page on gouni.edu.ng, choose Music and submit. For this course the form costs nothing.
  6. Watch your e-mail: GOUNI says the reply comes within three working days.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer within JAMB’s four-week window. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: pay only through the university’s own online payment platform, then print your JAMB admission letter for clearance.

Before you pay

GOUNI states that all its programmes have NUC accreditation, but no programme-level result for Music is published. Ask the admissions office by e-mail to confirm the programme’s current NUC status and any audition requirement before paying tuition, and pay only through the university’s own platform.

Studying Music at GOUNI

Is GOUNI Music accredited by the NUC?

This is what I could and could not confirm on 30 October 2026:

  • GOUNI’s own claim: the university’s accreditation page says all its programmes have NUC accreditation, but it gives no programme-by-programme status or date.
  • NUC’s published results: the NUC’s “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” publication (September 2026) is online, but the copy I could read stopped before the universities starting with G, and I found no NUC report page naming GOUNI Music.
  • Older news: a 9 August 2021 report listed 13 GOUNI programmes with full NUC accreditation. Music was not one of them, which only means it was not part of that visit.
  • The department is active: GOUNI’s 2024/2025 first-semester examination timetable lists Music papers from 100 to 400 level, and the university has put its B.A. Music curriculum online.

So I am treating the NUC status of Music as not independently confirmed. That is I found no report of a denied or suspended result either. Ask GOUNI’s admissions office in writing before you pay tuition.

What you study

GOUNI’s B.A. Music curriculum, dated September 2023, needs at least 120 credit units to graduate. Its main courses by level:

SIWES comes in the second semester of 300 level, in a music studio or an electronic media house. The curriculum names music education, theory and composition, musicology, music technology, production and management, and performance as the areas of specialisation.

Careers

The curriculum describes graduates as teachers and entrepreneurs in music technology, composition, performance, production and management. In practice that means school music teaching (with a teaching qualification), church music direction, studio production and sound engineering, media work, arranging and composing for film and adverts, and running a music school.

Mistakes that cost Music applicants a GOUNI place

  • No Music in the UTME: GOUNI has no published waiver.
  • No proof of music ability: without a Music credit or graded certificate, you need the audition.
  • Mathematics at pass: GOUNI’s form page asks for a credit.
  • Waiting for an audition notice that never comes: ask the department yourself after you submit.
  • O’level not on CAPS when GOUNI is ready to propose you.
