Warwick Chancellor's International Scholarship 2027: Full PhD Funding, Eligibility and Deadline
The Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarship now runs as the Faculty and Interdisciplinary Chancellors’ Scholarships: full fees, a UKRI stipend for 3.5 years and a £5,000 grant for PhD students of any nationality. Apply by 10 December 2026.

The Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarship is a fully funded PhD award at the University of Warwick in the UK. It pays your tuition fees in full at the international rate, a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate for three and a half years, and a £5,000 research training grant. For October 2027 entry, Warwick runs these awards as the Faculty Chancellors’ and Interdisciplinary Chancellors’ Scholarships, with up to 42 places between them, open to any nationality.

Two deadlines apply. You must submit your PhD course application by 7 December 2026 and your scholarship application by 10 December 2026, both at 16:59 GMT. Results come out by 5 March 2027. The rest of this guide covers what changed in the name, who can apply, how the two written statements are judged and how to give yourself a real chance at a 5 to 10 percent success rate.

What happened to the “Chancellor’s International” name?

For years, Warwick advertised the Chancellor’s International Scholarship as its flagship award for overseas PhD applicants. Older Warwick department pages still use that name, and many scholarship listing sites copy it. On the 2027 entry competition page, the University no longer uses it. The Chancellors’ awards now appear as two streams: Faculty Chancellors and Interdisciplinary Chancellors.

International applicants get the same package as before and remain fully eligible. Fees are paid at whatever rate applies to you, UK or international, so an overseas student does not lose out. You simply compete in the same pool as UK applicants. If you search the Warwick site for “Chancellor’s International” and find nothing current, this is why.

What the scholarship pays

Both Chancellors’ streams carry the same package.

Warwick’s page does not print a stipend figure; it links to the UKRI rate. For planning, the UKRI minimum doctoral stipend for 2026/27 is £21,805 a year. Your award will use the 2027/28 UKRI rate, which may be a little higher.

Costs the award does not cover

The stipend is set for one person. If you plan to bring a spouse or children, you will need to show extra funds for their visas and living costs. You also pay for your flight to the UK and, unless Warwick’s visa support covers it, the student visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge up front. Budget for a deposit on accommodation in Coventry or Leamington Spa before your first stipend payment arrives.

Who is eligible

You can be considered for either Chancellors’ stream if all of these apply:

  1. You apply for an eligible Warwick research degree starting in October 2027: PhD, MPhil/PhD, EngD, or the PhD stage of a Masters plus PhD.
  2. You will start in the 2027/28 academic year.
  3. You are not already a postgraduate research student at Warwick.
  4. You submit the course application by 7 December 2026 and the scholarship application by 10 December 2026.
  5. You hold an admission offer before a scholarship can be confirmed.

For the Interdisciplinary stream there are two extra conditions. You must say in your application that you want to be considered, write a statement of up to 300 words, and propose a project that links to one or more of Warwick’s Research Spotlights or Research Centres.

Eligibility edge cases

  • Current Warwick PhD students: not eligible for the Chancellors’ streams. Only first-year students applying for China Scholarship Council funding can use the portal.
  • Masters plus PhD students: if you are on a 2+4 scheme (for example in Warwick Business School or Economics) and will enter the PhD stage in October 2027, you may apply.
  • Fee status disputes: the Doctoral College cannot change your fee status. Raise any challenge with Postgraduate Admissions early.
  • Part-time international students: most Student visa holders must study full-time, so part-time funding mainly helps UK-based applicants.
  • People with refugee status or asylum claims: Warwick runs a separate Doctoral Access (Sanctuary) stream with a four-year stipend. You reach it through the same application.

The six funding streams in one application

When you apply, you are considered for every stream you qualify for unless you opt out.

Do not leave this to the final week

After you submit your course application, Warwick takes up to 48 hours to email your 7-digit applicant ID, and you need that ID to open the scholarship form. The University also says an application usually cannot be finished in under 36 hours. Submit the course application by early December at the latest.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Pick your course and supervisor: search Warwick’s postgraduate research courses and contact a potential supervisor about your project before you apply.
  2. Read the criteria: study the Competency-Based Assessment Criteria and the Applicant Guidance Notes on the Doctoral College site.
  3. Submit the course application: through Warwick’s admissions system by 7 December 2026. Where it asks for a funder’s contact, give the Doctoral College email address.
  4. Brief your referees: their course references are forwarded to the scholarship assessors, so ask them to speak to the criteria below.
  5. Wait for your applicant ID: a 7-digit number arrives by email within 48 hours. Register your ITS account with it.
  6. Complete the scholarship application: research title (20 words), Person and Preparedness statement (500 words) and Project and Place statement (800 words), plus any optional stream statements.
  7. Submit by 10 December 2026: you cannot edit the form after submission, so check every section first.
  8. Make sure references arrive: by 21 December 2026.

What the scholarship form asks for

SectionLimitNotes
Research question or title20 wordsSpecific and plain
Person and Preparedness500 wordsYour capability, record and readiness
Project and Place800 wordsPlain English; assessors may be outside your field; no bibliography
Interdisciplinary Chancellors statement300 wordsOptional, needed for that stream
Personal circumstances300 wordsOptional; not used in assessment

Do not upload a CV, transcripts or certificates. Faculty assessors see only the scholarship form and supporting documents, not your course application, CV or full research proposal. Whatever you want them to know has to be inside those two statements.

How applications are judged

Warwick stopped using a numerical scoring matrix. Instead, candidates are ranked on how well they match two sets of criteria.

Person and Preparedness

Assessors look at research capability, your potential to work independently, your academic or professional record, achievements such as publications or leadership, readiness shown through references, and how you contribute to an inclusive research culture. Warwick says you are not expected to meet every point, and it weighs grades in context, including degree inflation and structural disadvantage.

Project and Place

This covers originality, how well you engage with the literature, the design and feasibility of your plan, why Warwick is the right place, the fit with your supervisor, and the likely impact of the work.

The three ranking stages

  1. Department: nominates a limited number of candidates, ranks them and writes a nomination statement on your references and supervision.
  2. Faculty: ranks the nominees across departments, with extra weight on Person and Preparedness.
  3. Allocation panels: one per stream, using faculty rankings plus each stream’s aims and the spread of awards.

How to write the two statements

I would treat these as the whole application, because they are all most assessors will read.

For Person and Preparedness, avoid a life story. Open with the strongest evidence that you can already do research: a thesis result, a paper, a dataset you built, a lab method you mastered. Then show readiness: what you know how to do on day one. Keep one short paragraph for wider contribution, such as mentoring, outreach or community work.

For Project and Place, use a simple order: the question, the gap, the method, the timeline and the reasons for Warwick. Name the supervisor, the research centre or the facility, and say exactly how each one helps the project. Write for an intelligent reader from another faculty.

A sample opening (invented for illustration): “Most flood warnings in West African cities reach residents after the water does. My project asks whether low-cost river sensors combined with SMS alerts can cut that delay in Lagos and Accra, building on hydrology work in Warwick’s School of Engineering.”

Common mistakes that cost places

  • Submitting the course application on 6 or 7 December and then running out of time for the scholarship form.
  • Repeating your CV in the Person and Preparedness statement instead of giving evidence of research ability.
  • Writing the project statement in heavy jargon, when assessors may come from another discipline.
  • Not contacting a supervisor, which weakens the department’s supervision statement.
  • Forgetting to tell referees that their letter also feeds the scholarship ranking.
  • Ticking the Interdisciplinary stream without writing its statement or linking to a Research Spotlight.

What happens after you apply

Assessment starts straight after 10 December. Warwick sends a mid-stage notification by 25 January 2027 and releases outcomes by 5 March 2027. You will be offered a scholarship, placed on a reserve list or told you were unsuccessful. Warwick does not give individual feedback. A reserve place can turn into an award if someone declines, so keep your offer active. Once you accept, you apply for your Student visa using the CAS from Warwick and show you can meet any costs the award does not pay.

Warwick’s award is the only one here that covers living costs for a full doctorate. The others are useful if you are not yet at PhD level.

Who should apply, and who should not

Apply if you have a first-class or strong upper second degree, or a master’s with distinction, a clear research question and a supervisor who wants to work with you. Applicants with publications, research jobs or strong professional practice in the field do well.

Hold off if you want a taught master’s (this competition is research degrees only), if you are already a Warwick PGR student, or if you cannot start in October 2027. If your project is still vague, spend a few weeks with a supervisor first; a rushed proposal rarely survives the department ranking.

Checked on 25 October 2026 against the University of Warwick Doctoral College’s 2027 PGR Scholarship Competitions page (revised in October 2026), its Applicant Guidance page and its Competency-Based Assessment Criteria page (revised 23 September 2026).
