The Liberty Career Academy Scholarship 2026 is a Nigerian education grant of up to ₦200,000, run by Liberty Career Academy (LCA), with mentorship and career guidance on top of the money. It is open to Nigerian students in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and vocational schools, and to other Africans legally living or studying in Nigeria. The application deadline is 3 November 2026.
There are three categories: the Adeola Okungbaye Award for orphans and students from single-parent or struggling homes, a merit award for high achievers, and the Gifted Hands Award for vocational and technical trainees. You may apply for only one. Applying is free; never pay anyone to apply or to “process” your application.

This is an annual award. The 2025 round, also listed at up to ₦200,000 with the same three categories, closed on 22 October 2025, so the 2026 deadline falls about two weeks later than last year’s.
Deadline
The LCA scholarship form closes on 3 November 2026. Write your 500-word personal statement yourself: LCA says statements generated with AI lead to automatic disqualification.
LCA scholarship categories and amounts
| Category | Award (as listed) | Who it is for | Academic cut-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adeola Okungbaye Award | ₦200,000 | Orphans, children of widows or widowers, single-parent homes, or students with proven financial need | CGPA 4.0/5.0, or JAMB 240 for new admits (ScholarshipAir); other listings give CGPA 3.5 and JAMB 220 |
| Academic Excellence (Merit-Based) Award | ₦150,000 | High achievers with extracurricular involvement and leadership potential | CGPA 4.0/5.0, or JAMB 270 for new admits (ScholarshipAir); other listings give CGPA 3.70 and JAMB 240 |
| Gifted Hands Award | ₦100,000 | Unemployed trainees in an accredited public or private vocational or technical institution | No CGPA cut-off; age 18 to 35 (ScholarshipAir) or 18 to 25 (other listings) |
The cut-offs differ between listings, and LCA’s own application form is final. If you sit between the two figures (say a 3.8 CGPA for the merit award), read the form’s requirements before you spend time on the statement. The Gifted Hands money can go to training costs or to tools and equipment such as sewing machines, baking ovens or mechanical tools.
The 2025 listings called the first category the Adeola Okungbaye Memorial Award. LCA has not published a biography of Adeola Okungbaye, so I cannot tell you more about the person it honours.
General eligibility for all categories
- Year of study: year 1 to 3 of a four-year programme, year 1 to 4 of a five-year programme, or year 1 to 5 of a six-year programme. Final-year students are not eligible.
- Institution: an accredited Nigerian university, polytechnic, college of education or technical college (or a vocational institution for Gifted Hands).
- Results: your WASSCE and JAMB results. If you are already in school, LCA uses your most recent CGPA.
- ID: a valid government-issued ID. If you have none, you can use a direct family member’s ID as support.
- Personal statement: 500 words, in your own words.
- Proof: every academic and non-academic claim must be verifiable. Shortlisted candidates submit evidence, and some are interviewed.
Fresh students applying with a JAMB score should have their result slip ready. Our guide on how to check your JAMB result shows how to reprint it, and if you are relying on a new admission, the JAMB CAPS guide explains how to confirm and print your admission status as proof.
Eligibility edge cases
- Two-year ND or NCE programmes: the year-of-study rule is written for four to six-year degrees. For ND1 and NCE students the listings are silent; ND2 or NCE3 is your final year, which suggests the final-year exclusion applies.
- CGPA on a 4.0 scale: some polytechnics grade on a 4-point scale. Convert honestly and state your actual scale on the form.
- Losing one parent: the Okungbaye category explicitly includes children of widows or widowers, so you do not need to have lost both parents.
- Vocational trainees with part-time jobs: Gifted Hands asks for unemployed trainees. If you do casual work, describe it accurately and let LCA decide.
- Non-Nigerian Africans: they can apply if they legally live or study in Nigeria, so keep your residence permit or student visa page ready as ID.
How to apply for the Liberty Career Academy Scholarship, step by step
- Pick one category: applying for more than one can get you disqualified.
- Gather documents: WASSCE and JAMB results, latest CGPA or admission proof, ID, and evidence for anything you claim (death certificate of a parent, leadership roles, awards).
- Write your statement: 500 words on your background, your goals and why you need the support. Use specific events from your life.
- Fill the form: at lcaglobal.org/scholarship-application-form before 3 November 2026. Programme details are on LCA’s scholarships page.
- Save a copy: paste your statement into the form from a saved document, and screenshot the confirmation screen.
- Watch your email and phone: shortlisted candidates are asked for evidence and may be invited to an interview.

How to write the 500-word LCA personal statement
LCA’s 2025 listing said selection weighs academic or skill potential, financial need or leadership drive, and the authenticity, clarity and passion of the personal statement. Read that last part again: the statement is scored, and LCA bans AI-written text. A plain, honest 500 words in your own voice is what they want.
Shape it around your category:
- Adeola Okungbaye Award: lead with your family situation and how you have kept your grades up despite it. Show what you have done to cope, not only what you lack.
- Merit award: lead with one leadership or community project, with a result you can prove, then your academic record.
- Gifted Hands: lead with your craft. Describe something you have made or fixed, and name the tool or training the money would buy.
A workable 500-word layout: about 100 words on who you are and your situation, 150 on what you have achieved and how, 150 on your goals and how LCA’s mentorship fits them, and 100 on exactly what the money would pay for.
A sample opening for the Gifted Hands category, invented for illustration: “I am 22 and in my second year of a fashion design programme at a government technical college in Ibadan. Since I finished secondary school I have sewn school uniforms for my neighbours on a borrowed hand machine, and an industrial straight-stitch machine would let me take on twice the work.” It shows the skill, the effort and a specific use for the money. Write your own with your own facts, and keep evidence for every claim, since shortlisted applicants are asked to prove them.
Common mistakes
- Applying in two categories: it risks disqualification from both.
- Claims you cannot prove: leadership roles, awards and family circumstances are checked at shortlisting.
- AI-written statements: LCA disqualifies them automatically.
- Applying in your final year: you are outside the year-of-study rule.
- Ignoring the word count: 500 words is the target. A 150-word statement looks careless; a 1,200-word one ignores the brief.
What happens after you apply
After 3 November, LCA reviews applications and shortlists candidates. Shortlisted applicants are asked to submit evidence for their claims, and some are invited to an interview or document verification. LCA has not published how many awards it gives, the interview format or a results date.
Winners receive the grant for their category and join LCA’s mentorship and career coaching, with access to its alumni and partner network. Gifted Hands winners may receive tools or equipment instead of, or as well as, cash for training fees. If you are not selected, you can apply again in the next annual round as long as you are not in your final year.
Costs the LCA grant will not cover
- Full tuition at most private universities, where ₦200,000 is a small part of the fees.
- Hostel, feeding and transport for a whole session.
- Expensive equipment for Gifted Hands trainees beyond the ₦100,000 listed.
- Support in later years, since each round is a one-off grant.
How the LCA scholarship compares with similar awards
| Scholarship | Main benefit | Who it targets |
|---|---|---|
| Liberty Career Academy | ₦100,000 to ₦200,000 plus mentorship | Undergraduates and vocational trainees, not in final year |
| Startup Abuja Scholarship | One session tuition, stipend, paid internship | Any course, no CGPA cut-off |
| SOHCAHTOA Foundation Scholarship | ₦250,000 | 200 level and above |
| Gabriel Ezenri Foundation Scholarship | Up to ₦500,000 | Nigerian undergraduates |
LCA is one of very few Nigerian awards that includes vocational and technical trainees, so if you are learning a trade, it deserves a place on your list even when the others do not fit.
Who should apply, and who should not
Apply if you are a Nigerian or African resident student, not in your final year, and you fit one category clearly: an orphan or child of a single parent with good grades, a high achiever with a leadership record you can prove, or an unemployed vocational trainee in the right age band.
Skip it if you are in your final year, your grades fall below every published cut-off for your category, or you cannot back your claims with documents. The evidence check after shortlisting will catch exaggeration.
