The Glasgow International Leadership Scholarship is a £10,000 tuition fee discount from the University of Glasgow for international students starting a one-year taught Master’s degree in Scotland. The university now runs it under a new name, the Global Leadership Scholarship, and that is the title you will see on gla.ac.uk and in the application form. The award is the same kind of thing: a merit discount for high achievers with international or EU fee status, open to applicants from about 200 countries, including all 54 African countries on the list.
For September 2027 entry, Glasgow will offer 350 of these awards, up from 281 for 2026/27. The form has not opened yet. The official page says the closing date is usually in late August, so the deadline for 2027 entry is late August 2027, and you must hold a programme offer before you apply. I checked every detail below against the University of Glasgow scholarship pages on 25 October 2026.

Why the name changed to Global Leadership Scholarship
Many scholarship sites, including Scholars4Dev, still list this award as the Glasgow International Leadership Scholarship. Glasgow’s current scholarship pages use the name Global Leadership Scholarship, and the listing sites that still carry the old title now link to the Global Leadership page. The terms match the older award: £10,000 off tuition, first class grades, international fee status and an offer for a taught Master’s.
This matters for one practical reason. When you search the Glasgow scholarships database or the applicant portal, search for “Global Leadership”. If you type the old name, you may conclude the award no longer exists and miss it.
What the scholarship covers, and what it does not
The award is a fee discount, applied straight to your tuition account. You never receive it as cash. It covers one year only, which is the full length of most eligible programmes. Two exceptions on the official list, the Book and Paper Conservation MPhil and the Textile Conservation MPhil, run longer, and the discount applies to the first year of those.
International Master’s fees at Glasgow are well above £10,000 for every programme, so this is a partial scholarship. You still need to fund the rest of your tuition and all of your living costs. Here is what stays on your bill:
- The balance of tuition after the £10,000 discount (check the fee on your programme page)
- Any tuition deposit Glasgow asks for to confirm your place
- The UK Student visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge
- Rent, food and transport in Glasgow for the whole year
- Flights, English tests, transcript fees and courier costs
For the visa, UK Visas and Immigration wants to see that you hold the remaining tuition plus a set amount for living costs in your account for 28 days. Many UK universities quote the Student visa fee at £524 and the health surcharge at £776 per year for 2026, but GOV.UK sets these figures and they can change, so check there before you budget.
Glasgow International Leadership Scholarship eligibility
You need to meet all four conditions on the official page:
- Grades: academic results equivalent to a UK First Class Honours degree.
- Offer: an offer of a place on an eligible full-time, one-year taught Master’s starting in September 2027. Conditional offers count, because the rule is that you hold an offer.
- Fee status: international or EU fee status. Home (UK) fee payers cannot apply.
- Country: you must come from one of the listed countries or regions. The list runs to roughly 200 entries and covers Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania.
What counts as first class from outside the UK
Glasgow compares your degree with UK classes using its own country equivalency tables, which sit on each country page of its international section. For many African systems, a first class degree or a CGPA in the top band of the scale is the usual match, while a second class upper may only meet the admission requirement, not the scholarship one. Look up your country on gla.ac.uk before you spend time on the form. If your result sits in the 2:1 band, apply for the programme anyway but treat this award as unlikely.
Programmes that do and do not qualify
| Eligible | Not eligible |
|---|---|
| Full-time, one-year, in-person taught Master’s on the official list (MSc, MA, MLitt, MEd, LLM and others) | Postgraduate diplomas and certificates |
| The MBA, which appears on the 2027 list | Online and distance-learning programmes |
| Listed MRes programmes, such as Biomedical Sciences and Management | Part-time study |
| Book and Paper Conservation MPhil and Textile Conservation MPhil (first year only) | Research degrees such as the PhD |
Always open the eligible programmes tab on the official page and find your exact programme name. A course that looks similar but is not on the list will not attract the award.
Eligible countries for African and other international applicants
The 2027/28 list includes all 54 African countries, from Algeria to Zimbabwe. Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe are all on it, as are the francophone and lusophone countries such as Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Angola and Mozambique. Outside Africa the list covers most of Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Pacific and EU countries. The registration form asks for your country of residence, so if you are a citizen of one listed country living in another, ask the scholarships team which counts for you.
Glasgow International Leadership Scholarship deadline and key dates
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Programme applications for September 2027 | Open now on the Glasgow applicant portal |
| Scholarship form opens | “Shortly”, per the official page; register your interest to get an email |
| Decisions | Within six weeks of your offer or scholarship form, whichever is later |
| Deadline | Late August 2027 |
| Programme starts | September 2027 |
Awards are made on a rolling basis, so a late August deadline is misleading. With 350 places and thousands of eligible offer holders, the pool shrinks as the year goes on. Many programmes also close or fill well before August, and international students need time for a visa after that. I would aim to submit the scholarship form between January and March 2027.
There was also a January 2026 version of this award for six engineering and education MSc programmes, with a closing date of 7 December 2025. Glasgow had not posted a January 2027 version when I checked. If it repeats that round, last year’s pattern points to a deadline of 7 December 2026 (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens).
How to apply for the Global Leadership Scholarship
- Check the lists: confirm that your country and your exact programme appear on the Global Leadership Scholarship page on gla.ac.uk.
- Register your interest: fill the short form on that page so Glasgow emails you when the scholarship form opens.
- Apply for the programme: submit a full application through the University of Glasgow online applicant portal with your transcripts, degree certificate, personal statement, references and English test result if required.
- Get your offer: wait for a conditional or unconditional offer. In the January 2026 round, Glasgow rejected scholarship forms submitted without an offer, so do not jump ahead.
- Complete the scholarship form: use the Apply button on the scholarship page once it opens. Have your applicant ID and offer details ready.
- Wait for the decision: Glasgow notifies successful applicants within six weeks.
- Accept and plan finances: the discount appears on your tuition account. Use your revised fee to plan the deposit, the visa funds and your CAS request.
How to write a strong leadership statement
Glasgow does not publish the questions on the scholarship form in advance, so prepare material you can adapt. The award has “leadership” in its name, and your programme personal statement is part of your file, so build both around evidence of leadership. Selectors look for things you led and what changed because of you.
- Open with one concrete achievement, with a number in it.
- Explain why this programme at Glasgow, naming modules or staff research that fit your plan.
- Describe what you will do after graduating and who benefits.
- Mention how you will contribute on campus, such as a society you would join or start.
An example opening: “In my final year at university I set up a weekend maths clinic for 40 secondary school students in my town, and their exam pass rate rose from 52 to 81 percent in one session. I want the MSc Education at Glasgow so I can build the same model into my state’s teacher training.” That gives the reader a fact, a result and a plan in two sentences. For references, our guide to a recommendation letter for scholarship applications shows what referees should include.
Common mistakes that cost applicants the award
- Applying for the scholarship before you hold a programme offer.
- Choosing a PgDip, a part-time route or an online course, none of which qualify.
- Assuming a 2:1 equivalent is enough. The scholarship asks for first class.
- Waiting for the August deadline when awards go out on a rolling basis.
- Planning to stack this with another Glasgow scholarship. You can only keep one; the lower award is removed.
- Forgetting that the award is £10,000 off the fee. You still need visa funds for the rest.
What happens after you apply
Glasgow assesses scholarship forms against the grade and eligibility rules and sends decisions by email within six weeks. If you are successful, the £10,000 shows as a discount on your tuition invoice. If you also win another Glasgow scholarship or a sponsorship discount, the university keeps the higher award and removes the lower one. The Alumni Discount is the only one you can combine with it. If you are unsuccessful, your programme offer stands, and you can still look for external funding.
Who should apply, and who should not
Apply if you have a first class degree or its equivalent, want a one-year taught Master’s in Glasgow, and can show where the rest of the money will come from: savings, family support, an employer or a second external award. The discount makes a big difference to a self-funded budget.
Look elsewhere if you need full funding, want a PhD or a part-time course, or graduated with a 2:1. In that case a fully funded scheme such as Commonwealth Shared Scholarships, or the awards in our scholarships for African students guide, is a better use of your time.

Sources and updates
The value, the 350 awards for 2027/28, the eligibility rules, the country and programme lists, the stacking rule and the late August closing date come from the Global Leadership Scholarship page on gla.ac.uk. The January 2026 round and its 7 December 2025 closing date come from Glasgow’s separate January 2026 scholarship page. The 2026/27 figure of 281 awards comes from the Scholars4Dev listing, and the visa fee and health surcharge are figures UK universities quote for 2026; confirm both on GOV.UK. Checked on 25 October 2026. I will update this page when Glasgow opens the 2027 form and confirms the date.
