The Chalmers IPOET Scholarship cuts tuition by 75% for international master’s students who have to pay fees in Sweden. It is funded by the Swedish Council for Higher Education and awarded by Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg to roughly 33 to 35 new students each year. If you do very well in your first year, the reduction can rise to 85% for your second year. No cash is paid to you, so rent, food and travel stay your responsibility.
For autumn 2027 entry, apply to at least one Chalmers master’s programme on universityadmissions.se between 16 October 2026 and 15 January 2027, then use your application number to fill the separate Chalmers scholarship form, which opens in late November 2026. The Deadline for the scholarship matches the programme deadline: 15 January 2027. Award emails go out between mid-March and late April 2027.
What the Chalmers IPOET Scholarship pays
IPOET is a fee reduction. Chalmers simply invoices you for the part of the tuition the scholarship does not cover. Here is what that means in Swedish kronor at the fee levels Chalmers has published for students starting in 2027/28.
| Programme group | Full fee per year | You pay in year 1 (75% off) | You pay in year 2 if raised to 85% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most master’s programmes | SEK 190,000 (95,000 per semester) | SEK 47,500 | SEK 28,500 |
| Architectural Design, Urban Design, Human-Centred Design and Engineering | SEK 270,000 (135,000 per semester) | SEK 67,500 | SEK 40,500 |
These amounts are my own arithmetic from the official fee table, so treat them as a guide. If you stay at 75% for both years on a standard programme, your share of tuition over two years comes to SEK 95,000 instead of SEK 380,000. For comparison, the fee for 2026/27 starters was lower (SEK 80,000 per semester on most programmes), so older articles quoting smaller savings are using last year’s numbers.
What IPOET does not cover
- Living costs: the Swedish Migration Agency expects students to show at least SEK 10,656 a month for a residence permit, according to Stockholm University’s guidance.
- The remaining 25% (or 15%) of tuition: you pay this to Chalmers each semester.
- Application fee: SEK 900, paid once per semester on universityadmissions.se, however many programmes you list.
- Travel, visa and insurance costs outside what the university arranges.
Chalmers IPOET Scholarship eligibility
The rules are short: anyone who pays fees and applies to a Chalmers master’s can be considered, which is why competition is heavy.
- Fee status: you must be a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA who is required to pay tuition fees in Sweden. Swiss citizens and holders of a permanent Swedish residence permit do not pay fees, so they do not need it.
- Level: you must be applying to the first year of a two-year master’s programme. Students already enrolled at Chalmers cannot apply.
- Field: unrestricted. Every current Chalmers master’s programme qualifies, from Physics to Architecture.
- Programme application: you need a valid universityadmissions.se application that lists at least one Chalmers master’s programme.
- Admission: the award only takes effect if you are admitted and enrol.
Entry requirements for the master’s itself
You cannot hold the scholarship without a place, so check these first. Chalmers asks for a bachelor’s degree equivalent to at least three years (180 credits) in science, engineering, technology or architecture, plus English at the Swedish “English 6” level or an accepted equivalent. Each programme adds its own subject requirements, and a few need a portfolio. Chalmers says it sets no minimum CGPA for admission, but IPOET selection leans heavily on grades, so a modest average will make the scholarship hard to win.
Edge cases people ask about
- You already have other funding: Chalmers says outside funding does not affect your eligibility, because financial status is not looked at during nomination.
- You hold dual EU and non-EU citizenship: you would normally be fee-exempt, so IPOET would not apply.
- You finish your bachelor’s in 2027: final-year students apply in the same round and prove completion by the deadlines universityadmissions.se sets.
- You rank a Chalmers programme second: you can still be considered, but Chalmers counts the priority order of your programme choices, so a lower ranking can weaken your case.
How Chalmers chooses IPOET winners
Chalmers lists no essay or interview stage for IPOET. It ranks applicants on relative academic excellence, which is mostly your weighted average grade. It also weighs the standing of your home university, including where it sits on global rankings, and the priority order you gave Chalmers programmes on your application. So your grades and your programme ranking carry most of the weight.
I would not try to “game” the ranking factor. You cannot change where your university sits. What you can control is how clearly your grades come across: include the official grading scale, your CGPA, and a class-of-degree statement if your university issues one.

Before you pay
Chalmers advises students who need a scholarship to wait for the decision before paying the first tuition invoice. Missing out on a scholarship is not a reason for a refund, and no refund applies if you apply for your residence permit after 15 June.
How to apply for the Chalmers IPOET Scholarship
- Pick your programmes: browse Chalmers master’s programmes and decide your ranking. Put your strongest Chalmers choice first.
- Create an account: register on universityadmissions.se with an email you check daily, because Chalmers sends invoices and offers there.
- Submit the programme application: add your Chalmers choices between 16 October 2026 and 15 January 2027 and note the application number you are given.
- Fill the scholarship form: when Chalmers opens it in late November 2026, complete the separate scholarship application on the Chalmers scholarships page using your application number. You may submit it before your programme documents are complete.
- Upload documents: degree certificates, transcripts with grades and CGPA, proof of English, course syllabi, passport, CV, motivation letter, recommendation letter and any work records. Documents not in English or Swedish need official translations.
- Pay the SEK 900 fee: by card is quickest. The fee and documents must arrive by 1 February 2027.
- Watch your inbox: admission results come on 1 April 2027 and scholarship offers between mid-March and late April. Accept your offer by the date in the email.
Chalmers uses the same scholarship application for all the master’s scholarships it administers. The current list has IPOET, the Avancez Scholarships, the Adlerbert Study Scholarships and the US Friends of Chalmers awards. You do not pick IPOET by name.
Making your documents work for you
Since selection is grade driven, the motivation letter matters for your programme admission more than for IPOET. Even so, a weak file can cost you the place, and then the scholarship goes too. Here is how I would build each piece.
Motivation letter
- Open with the specific problem or field you want to work in and why this programme suits it.
- Name two or three courses or research groups at Chalmers and link them to what you have already done.
- Give evidence: a final-year project, an internship, a paper or a tool you built.
- Close with what you plan to do after the degree, in one or two sentences.
A short example opening: “During my final-year project on solar inverter losses in Lagos, I kept running into the limits of what I knew about power electronics. The Electric Power Engineering programme at Chalmers is where I want to fix that.”
Transcript and grading scale
Upload the official grading key with your transcript. If your university ranks students or gives a class of degree, include that letter too. Selectors compare people from hundreds of systems, and anything that makes your average easy to read helps you.
Common mistakes that cost applicants the award
- Skipping the separate scholarship form because they think the programme application is enough.
- Missing the 1 February fee and document deadline, which makes the application late.
- Ranking Chalmers below other Swedish universities when they actually want Chalmers.
- Paying the full first-semester invoice before scholarship results, then expecting a refund.
- Assuming IPOET pays a stipend and arriving without enough money for living costs.
- Uploading transcripts without the grading scale or a certified translation.
After you get an IPOET offer
Accept the offer in time, then pay the reduced first-semester fee by 1 May 2027. Chalmers tells the Swedish Migration Agency once you have paid, and you can then apply for your residence permit for studies. You will need to show you can cover living costs for the permit, so plan that money early. Chalmers says scholarship offers are valid for two years of study under its Scholarship Regulations, so read those rules on keeping the award once you receive them. The 85% second-year increase is reserved for students who excel in year one, so treat first-year grades as part of the award.

Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg sit in the same city, so many applicants list both. If you want a wider view of options by country, see our guide to scholarships in Europe.
Who should apply and who should not
- Apply if you have a top-of-class average in engineering, science or architecture, you want Chalmers as your first choice, and you can fund living costs plus a quarter of tuition.
- Apply if you come from a well-known university in your country, since institutional standing is part of the scoring.
- Think twice if you need a full scholarship with a stipend. IPOET alone will leave you short, so look at fully funded options as well.
- Skip it if you are an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen, or already a Chalmers student.

Sources and updates
Checked on 25 October 2026 against Chalmers University of Technology’s pages on scholarships for fee-paying students, tuition fees and key dates for master’s studies, plus its guide to applying for master’s programmes. The application fee comes from University Admissions in Sweden, and the monthly maintenance figure from Stockholm University’s living-costs page. Coverage, the 85% rule and the selection criteria match the Scholars4Dev listing and other recent listings, but Chalmers had not yet posted its full 2027 IPOET description, so confirm the figures there when it does. This post will be updated at that point.
