Max Planck internships in computer science are research placements at three Max Planck Institutes in Germany: the MPI for Informatics in Saarbrücken, the MPI for Software Systems in Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern, and the MPI for Security and Privacy in Bochum. They run through one joint programme managed by the Max Planck Center for Computer Science (CIS). A typical internship lasts 12 to 14 weeks, and the official page says every internship is fully funded: a monthly stipend, housing and round-trip travel.
For internships starting between May and August 2027, the deadline is 1 November 2026, and the institutes call it strict. For any other start date there is no fixed deadline, but you should apply at least five months ahead. Students at bachelor’s, master’s and PhD level can apply from any country, and you do not need German.
Max Planck internships 2027: key facts
| Item | Details |
|---|---|

| Not included | MPI for Intelligent Systems; contact its faculty directly |
| Length | Typically 12 to 14 weeks; longer internships are possible |
| Funding | Monthly stipend described as enough to cover living costs comfortably, plus housing and round-trip travel from your usual residence |
| Stipend amount | Not published |
| Working language | English; no German needed and no English test to submit |
| Deadline (summer 2027 starts) | 1 November 2026 |
| Results (summer starts) | Before 1 February 2027 |
| Other start dates | Rolling; apply at least 5 months before you want to start |
| Portal | apply.cis.mpg.de (do not email documents) |
One application covers all three institutes. Research groups review the pool and pick interns who fit their work, so you are applying to a shared system and not to a single professor.
Max Planck internship deadlines and timeline
| If you want to start | Deadline | When you hear back |
|---|---|---|
| May to August 2027 (summer) | 1 November 2026, strict | Before 1 February 2027. No reply by then means you were not selected. |
| Any other month | No fixed date; apply at least 5 months before | Within about 4 months. No reply in 4 months means you were not selected. |
Summer is the busiest period, because most students are free from May to August. If your university calendar allows an autumn or winter internship, applying for an off-peak start can face less competition, although the official FAQ says positions outside summer are limited too.
What interns actually do
Projects are not listed in advance. After selection, you and your mentor agree on a project and dates together. The work is real research in a faculty-led group, and the institutes cover areas such as algorithms, programming languages, distributed systems, machine learning, computer vision, graphics, security and privacy. A typical internship includes:
- Reading the group’s recent papers and the code base you will build on.
- Working on a defined research problem with a faculty member or senior researcher as mentor.
- Writing code, running experiments and presenting results at group meetings.
- In some cases, contributing to a paper. The official page does not promise a publication, so treat it as a possible bonus.
Bachelor’s or master’s students can turn the internship into a thesis if their home university allows it. If you plan this, get written approval from your university before you apply, and mention it in your application.
Stipend and costs: what fully funded means here
This is one of the few programmes where “fully funded” comes from the host itself. CIS states that all internships cover living costs, housing and roundtrip travel. The gaps are around the edges:
| Cost | Covered? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly stipend | Yes | Amount not published; described as sufficient to cover living costs comfortably |
| Housing | Yes | Arranged or covered by the institute |
| Round-trip travel | Yes | From your habitual residence to the institute |
| Visa documents | Yes | The institute sends what you need for the German consulate |
| Visa fee | Sometimes | May be waived for stays up to 3 months; for longer stays, ask the institute after you are accepted |
| Health insurance | Not stated | Ask your mentor or the coordinator once selected |
| Personal travel and extras | No | Weekend trips and personal spending are yours |
Because the stipend figure is not public, ask the coordinator to confirm the monthly amount and housing arrangement in writing after you get an offer. Visa decisions belong to the German consulate, and the institute has no control over them, so book your appointment as soon as you have the documents.
Who can apply for Max Planck internships
Eligible
- Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students anywhere in the world with a basic computer science background.
- By the start date, you should have roughly the coursework of the first three years of a standard CS bachelor’s.
- An excellent academic record, however long it is so far.
- Industry applicants who want to move into academic CS research.
- Thesis students whose university lets the internship count as a thesis.
- Interdisciplinary applicants (for example from economics, law or social science) whose main focus is computer science.
Underrepresented groups in computing are particularly encouraged to apply.
Not a good fit
- Mechanical engineers or others moving into CS without the required CS education.
- Industry professionals looking for a career step within industry.
- Anyone wanting a placement at the MPI for Intelligent Systems; that institute is outside this programme.
Documents and how to apply
- Prepare your transcripts: unofficial copies are fine. If they are not in English, add an unofficial English translation and merge it with the original in one PDF.
- Update your CV: courses, projects, GitHub or code samples, any research, awards and programming languages.
- Line up a referee: you only enter contact details for at least one reference. Letters are not requested from every applicant.
- Register on the portal: apply.cis.mpg.de/register/internship.
- Fill in your record: if your university does not give a major GPA or class rank, work out the GPA yourself, enter N/A or 0 for rank and explain in the comment box.
- Add optional extras: a motivation letter, preferred faculty and preferred dates. Faculty choices are treated as preferences only.
- Submit once: send a single application even if you are interested in two areas.
Questions go to cis-internships@cis.mpg.de, in English. Do not email your documents.
If you are applying this week
With the summer deadline on 1 November 2026, this is a short plan for the days left:
- Today: register on the portal and see every field you will need, so nothing surprises you on the last day.
- Day 2: download transcripts from your student portal and, if needed, prepare an unofficial English translation in one PDF with the original.
- Day 3: ask your referee whether you may list them, and confirm their email address.
- Day 4: cut your CV to the essentials and add links to code or project write-ups.
- Day 5: write the motivation letter and choose up to a few preferred faculty after skimming their recent papers.
- Day 6: submit, and keep a copy of everything you entered.
If you cannot finish in time, do not rush a weak application. Apply for an off-peak start at least five months ahead instead, or prepare for the summer 2028 round, which on the current pattern would close on 1 November 2027.
Writing the optional motivation letter
The letter is optional, but it is your only space to say what research you want to do, and the groups read applications to find a match. I would always write one. Keep it under a page and make it specific.
A sample opening line: “I spent the last two semesters speeding up a graph-partitioning tool for my department’s lab, and I would like to spend a summer working on parallel graph algorithms with a group at MPI for Informatics.”
After the opening, name one or two research areas and, if you can, the faculty whose papers you have read and why. Describe one project in detail: the problem, what you built and what you learned. End with your preferred dates and whether the internship would count towards a thesis.
Selection process and interview tips
The official page describes selection as strictly merit-based and highly competitive. Reviewers look at your coursework, skills, references and any prior research, although research experience is not required.
- Review by research groups: groups read applications looking for interns who fit their projects.
- Remote interview: some candidates get a phone or video interview, in English.
- Matching: final selection depends on a group wanting you for a project.
- Offer by email: you are then connected with your mentor to set dates and the project.
For the interview, expect technical questions tied to your coursework and projects. Be ready to explain one project in depth, including what did not work. Read two or three recent papers from the group that contacts you, and prepare one question about their current work. Interviewers are usually checking that you can reason through a problem out loud and that you will be productive within 12 weeks.
Common mistakes
- Missing the 1 November cut-off for a summer start. It is strict, and late applications are not considered for summer.
- Emailing documents to professors or the coordinator instead of using the portal.
- Submitting two applications for two interests.
- Applying with too little CS coursework, for example from mechanical engineering with one programming course.
- Leaving GPA and rank fields confusing when your university uses a different system. Explain it in the comment box.
- Applying for an off-peak start only two or three months ahead. You need at least five.
- Expecting a project list. Projects are agreed after selection.
