Yale University scholarships for international undergraduates are need-based: Yale admits every applicant without looking at ability to pay, then meets 100% of each admitted student’s demonstrated financial need with scholarships, not loans, whatever their citizenship. If your family earns under $100,000 a year with typical assets, Yale expects nothing from your parents and covers tuition, housing, food and travel. There are no separate merit scholarships to apply for. For PhD students, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences pays full tuition and a stipend of at least $52,046 for 2026-2027, normally for five years.
The deadlines that matter now are close. Single-Choice Early Action applications are due on 1 November 2026, with the CSS Profile due by 1 December for international applicants, and Regular Decision applications are due on 2 January 2027. Here is what Yale aid covers, what your family might pay at different incomes, the forms, and the graduate funding, checked on Yale’s admissions, financial aid and graduate school pages on 25 October 2026.
Types of Yale University scholarships at a glance
| Funding | Level | Open to international students? | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yale Scholarship (need-based aid) | Bachelor’s (Yale College) | Yes, on the same terms as US students | 100% of demonstrated need; full cost when parent share is zero |
| Zero parent share award | Bachelor’s | Yes, if family income is under $100,000 with typical assets | Tuition, fees, housing, food, travel, hospitalisation insurance, $2,000 first-year start-up grant |
| GSAS PhD funding package | PhD | Yes; Yale lists no separate terms for international students | Tuition ($52,400 in 2026-2027), stipend of at least $52,046, health cover, usually 5 years |
| GSAS master’s funding | Master’s | Limited | Most master’s students pay tuition; a few programmes offer some funding |
Yale says it awards all financial aid on the basis of need, as scholarships rather than loans. There is no merit scholarship, sports scholarship or separate international scholarship to apply for at Yale College, so treat any “Yale merit award” you see listed for undergraduates with suspicion.
How much does Yale cost before aid?
Yale announced its 2025-2026 term bill in February 2025. I could not find the 2026-2027 figures on a Yale page I could open, so use these as the latest confirmed numbers and expect a small rise.
| Item (Yale College, 2025-2026) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $69,900 |
| Housing and meals (on campus) | $20,650 |
| Total term bill | $90,550 |
| Increase on 2024-2025 | 3.9% (up from $87,150) |
The term bill leaves out books, personal spending, travel and health insurance, so the full cost of attendance is higher. Yale’s aid for international students includes allowances for housing, meals and round-trip travel to campus twice a year, which matters if you live far from Connecticut.
How Yale need-based scholarships work for international students
Yale is one of a small group of US universities that is need-blind for applicants from every country. Its financial aid page for international applicants says a family’s ability to pay is not a factor in admission for any student, anywhere in the world, and that offers meet full demonstrated need regardless of citizenship or immigration status. Compare that with Duke, which funds only 20 to 25 new international students a year on need.
Yale works out your parent share from income, assets and family circumstances, and it adjusts awards for the difference between the US economy and your home country’s. The table shows what Yale publishes for a typical family.
| Annual family income (typical assets) | Expected parent share per year |
|---|---|
| Under $100,000 | $0 (full cost covered) |
| $150,000 | $10,000 |
| $200,000 | $20,000 (tuition covered at least) |
| $250,000 | $43,000 |
| $300,000 | $53,000 |
| $350,000 | $63,000 |
In January 2026 Yale raised its “no tuition” line to $200,000 for students entering in 2026-2027. Articles that still quote a $65,000 zero-contribution line are out of date. Yale’s own outcome figures: the average need-based scholarship is $75,220, 21% of students’ families pay nothing, and 88% of Yale College graduates leave with no student loan debt.
Yale does not define “typical assets”. If your family owns a business, farmland or several properties, the parent share can be higher than the table suggests. Use the net price calculator on Yale’s financial aid site with real figures before you rely on the table.
Yale University scholarships deadlines 2026-2027
| Round | Application deadline | Aid documents deadline (international) | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-Choice Early Action | 1 November 2026 | 1 December 2026 | Mid-December 2026 |
| QuestBridge National College Match | 1 November 2026 | 1 November 2026 | Early December 2026 |

Admitted first-years reply by 1 May 2027. Single-Choice Early Action is non-binding, but it restricts you from applying early to other private US universities, so read Yale’s rules on the SCEA page before you choose it. GSAS deadlines are 11:59pm US Eastern time.
Eligibility and admission requirements for international applicants
There is no separate scholarship eligibility test. If Yale admits you and your family shows need, you get aid. Admission is the hard part, and these are Yale’s stated requirements for international first-years.
- SAT or ACT: required for first-year and transfer applicants, including international students. National leaving exams (WAEC, A levels, the IB and others) and English tests do not satisfy this.
- English proficiency: required if English is not your first language and you have not had at least two years of secondary school taught in English. Yale accepts TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge English Qualifications, the Duolingo English Test and InitialView.
- Documents in English: transcripts and letters in another language need a certified translation. Yale does not accept self-translated documents.
- School documents: school report and counsellor letter, two teacher recommendations, mid-year report and final report, submitted through your application platform.
Yale does not publish minimum English scores. It shows baseline scores that reflect its most competitive applicants, but the Yale Daily News reports that scores below them do not disqualify anyone. Figures such as “TOEFL 100, IELTS 7” on other sites are not Yale cut-offs.
Eligibility edge cases
- Dual US citizens and US permanent residents abroad: they file the FAFSA as well as the CSS Profile, and follow the US aid deadlines (1 November for Early Action).
- Undocumented students: Yale says aid meets full need regardless of immigration status.
- Fee waivers: Yale does not issue its own. You qualify through the Common App or the Coalition Application on SCOIR, using that platform’s criteria. QuestBridge applications are free. The low-income criteria some sites list (school lunch programmes, TRIO, USDA guidelines) are US programmes used for these waivers, not Yale scholarship rules.
How to apply for Yale financial aid
- Apply for admission: use the Common App, the Coalition Application on SCOIR, or QuestBridge, and tick that you will apply for financial aid.
- Submit the CSS Profile: on the College Board site, using Yale’s code 3987. International students do not file the FAFSA.
- Send income documents through IDOC: after the CSS Profile, College Board’s IDOC service asks for your parents’ tax returns or income statements. Families who do not file taxes submit a non-filer statement.
- Watch the status portal: Yale may add documents to your checklist, so log in every week or two.
- Read the offer: once you are admitted and your aid file is complete, Yale sends your aid offer. Contact the financial aid office if your family’s situation changes.
Writing the Yale essays when you need aid
Your aid request has no effect on admission, so your essays are not about money. They are what decides whether you get in. A few practical points:
- Be specific about your setting: readers do not know your school or city. One line of context (“my school has one physics teacher for 600 students”) explains your choices better than a long description.
- Show intellectual curiosity: describe something you pursued beyond class, what you read or built, and what you still want to know.
- Use your own voice: Yale’s English test policy notes that written responses also show your English, so write it yourself.
A sample opening: “Our generator ran for three hours a night, so I learned organic chemistry in the order the lights allowed: mechanisms by torch, practice problems at dawn.” It tells the reader about your circumstances and your persistence without asking for sympathy.
Yale graduate funding: PhD and master’s
GSAS funds PhD students in full. For 2026-2027 the package is:
- Tuition fellowship: covers full tuition of $52,400.
- Stipend: at least $52,046 for 12 months.
- Health cover: free full health insurance, including hospital and specialist care, for you, a legal spouse and children, plus a family support subsidy for students with children under 18.
- Length: typically a minimum of five years; many students qualify for sixth-year funding.
- Fees: technology, library, gym and student activities fees are not charged.
There is no separate funding application: you are considered when you apply to a programme. The GSAS application needs a statement of academic purpose, unofficial transcripts, three recommendation letters, a CV, TOEFL or IELTS for most non-native speakers, GRE scores where your programme asks for them, and a $105 fee or approved waiver (waiver deadline 2 January 2027). Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Economics, Public Health and Statistics close on 1 December 2026; others close as late as 2 January 2027.
Master’s degrees are different. GSAS says most master’s students do not receive its financial support and pay their own tuition. Yale’s professional schools, such as law, management and public health, run their own aid, so check each school’s page.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the SAT or ACT: Yale requires one, and your WAEC, A-level or IB results do not replace it.
- Missing the CSS Profile date: it is separate from the admission deadline (1 December or 15 February for international applicants).
- Self-translating documents: Yale rejects them; use a certified translator or your school.
- Searching for a merit scholarship form: there is none for Yale College.
- Assuming a master’s is funded: only the PhD comes with a guaranteed package.

Who should apply and who should not
Apply if you are near the top of your class, can sit the SAT or ACT, and your family could not pay $90,000 a year. Yale’s need-blind policy means a low income does not hurt you, and a family earning under $100,000 pays nothing. I would put Yale on the list alongside other full-need universities, because admission is very selective and no single school is a safe bet.
It is a poor fit if you want a funded master’s, if you cannot take the SAT or ACT in time for 2 January 2027, or if your family’s income is high enough that the parent share would still be out of reach. Our guide to the best American scholarships lists graduate alternatives.
