What need-blind admission means at Amherst

Most US colleges that give aid to international students are need-aware. They read your aid request alongside your application, and a high need can count against you when the aid budget runs low. Amherst says plainly that it follows a need-blind policy for all students, including international applicants. The admission committee decides on your application without looking at your family’s ability to pay.

Only a small group of US colleges do this for international students. Dartmouth is another; our Dartmouth King Scholars Program guide explains how Dartmouth adds extra support for low-income international students on top of need-blind admission. Our list of the best American scholarships for international students places Amherst among the full-need colleges worth applying to.

Need-blind does not make Amherst easier to get into. It only means money is not part of the decision. The admission rate is low, so a strong application still matters more than anything in this guide.

What the aid covers and what you pay

Amherst subtracts your family contribution from the cost of attendance. The gap is your calculated need, and Amherst fills it with a grant plus a campus job. Here are the 2026-27 costs Amherst publishes for international students.

Cost item (2026-27)AmountNotes
Tuition$75,330Billed by Amherst
Housing$10,980All residence halls cost the same
Meals$9,340Unlimited meal plan
Fees$710Includes a $355 per semester student activities fee
Personal expenses$1,800Standard estimate
TravelVariesOne round trip home per year for students living outside the US
Health insuranceAdded laterCollege plan required unless you have comparable cover
Billed charges (tuition, housing, meals, fees)$96,360Our total of the four billed items

Amherst says a year at the college costs it about $140,000 per student. What you are billed is less than that, and what an aided family pays is often far less again.

How a typical package is built

  1. Cost of attendance: billed charges plus personal costs and your travel allowance.
  2. Parent contribution: worked out from the CSS Profile and income documents, in your home currency.
  3. Student summer savings: usually $1,800 a year. It can be as low as $750 for lower-income students.
  4. Campus job: the first $1,800 of need is usually met through work during the academic year.
  5. Amherst scholarship: covers all remaining need as a grant you do not repay.

Amherst’s sample packages show how this works. In one example, a family earning $39,000 with no assets got a scholarship of $96,960 plus a $1,800 campus job, paid only the $750 summer savings, and received a $600 refund on the student account. The samples are US families, so treat them as a guide to the method, not a quote for your family.

Aid is only for students who apply at admission

Amherst meets need for students who apply for aid with their admission application. File the CSS Profile and documents by your round’s aid deadline (13 November 2026 for ED, 15 January 2027 for RD). Missing it can leave you without aid for all four years.

Who is eligible

You can receive Amherst need-based aid if:

  1. You are admitted to Amherst as a first-year or transfer student.
  2. You apply for financial aid by the deadline for your round.
  3. Your CSS Profile (or ISFAA) and documents show a gap between the cost of attendance and what your family can pay.

There is no nationality list, income cap or minimum grade for aid. Every country is treated the same way.

Eligibility edge cases

  • Transfer students already in the US: eligible if they show need, and they follow the same instructions as other international applicants.
  • Separated or divorced parents: both biological or adoptive parents must complete their own CSS Profile or ISFAA, with separate logins.
  • Parents who own a business or farm: file the Business/Farm Supplement as well.
  • Students from China: send a Salary Certificate issued by your parents’ employer.
  • Students from North Korea: use the ISFAA, since the CSS Profile is not available to you.
  • Currency swings: if your home currency moves 10% or more against the rate used for your award, Amherst reviews it once a year, in early August or early December.

Transfer applicants have their own aid deadlines: 2 November 2026 for spring transfer and 1 March 2027 for fall transfer. Returning students renew their aid by 1 March every year.

Early Decision is binding. If you are admitted, you must withdraw your other applications and attend. That is safe at Amherst only because the college meets full need; still, read your aid offer carefully before you commit.

How to apply for Amherst financial aid, step by step

  1. Create your application: Common App or Apply Coalition with Scoir, with your school transcripts and teacher references.
  2. Say you are applying for aid: answer the financial aid question in the application.
  3. Start the CSS Profile: create a College Board account, add Amherst (code 3003) and report your family’s finances in your home currency. Parent 1 and the student start first; Parent 2 can only file after the student lists a school that requires it.
  4. Ask for an ISFAA if the CSS fee is a hardship: request it through your admission account. Amherst treats it as equal to the CSS Profile.
  5. Wait for the Financial Aid Portal email: Amherst sends login instructions. Do not upload documents before you get them.
  6. Upload income documents: your parents’ original 2025 income and tax documents, plus employer statements of 2025 income and benefits. Use PDF files, keep the original currency and language, and add English translations.
  7. Send English test scores: TOEFL, IELTS Academic or Duolingo unless you qualify for a waiver.
  8. Check your portal: look for missing items after each upload and before the deadline.

English test waivers

You do not need an English test if English is your native language, or if your two most recent years of school were taught mainly in English. Amherst grants no waivers on other grounds, and it offers no ESL classes or provisional admission.

Writing an application that stands out

Since aid follows admission, your essays carry the weight here. Amherst does not interview applicants, so the essay is the main place it hears your voice. If you already did an InitialView interview, you may send it.

  1. Pick one real moment: a problem you worked on, a job you held, a family duty. Specific beats impressive.
  2. Show your thinking: what you tried, what went wrong, what you changed.
  3. Connect to learning: Amherst has an open curriculum with no core requirements, so show you can choose your own path.
  4. Keep the activities list concrete: hours per week, what you did, numbers where they exist.

A sample opening (invented for illustration): “Every Saturday I fixed phones at my uncle’s stall, and every Saturday someone asked why the battery died. By the third month I had a notebook of answers and a theory about cheap chargers.”

Strong recommendation letters also help. Give each teacher a short note listing your best work in their class, so the letter can describe it in detail.

What happens after you are admitted

Your aid offer comes with your admission decision if your documents are complete. It lists your grant, the campus job and the summer savings figure. Read the parent contribution line closely; that is the amount your family pays each year.

  • Outside scholarships: report all of them. They replace your campus job first, then up to $3,000 of your student contribution. Any more reduces the Amherst grant.
  • Work limits: up to 20 hours a week during classes and 40 hours at other times. Going over can put an F-1 visa at risk.
  • Renewal: reapply every year by 1 March. Amherst says it will always meet your full calculated need, so the grant moves if your family’s finances or the costs change.
  • Length: aid is available for eight semesters, and a ninth may be approved.
  • Special circumstances: job loss, a change in family size or disability costs can be reviewed by the aid office.

Costs Amherst aid may not fully cover

  • Your visa application fee and SEVIS fee.
  • Your first flight to the US if it falls outside the travel allowance.
  • The $1,800 summer savings and the earnings from your campus job, which you must actually earn.
  • Health insurance until it is added to your budget. Ask the aid office how it is handled for your package.
  • Winter clothing for Massachusetts, which most students from warm countries need to buy.

Common mistakes

  • Missing the aid deadline because it is four to ten days after the admission deadline.
  • Uploading phone photos of documents. Amherst asks for PDFs.
  • Leaving out the second parent’s CSS Profile when parents are separated.
  • Paying the CSS fee when the family truly cannot afford it, instead of asking for the ISFAA.
  • Treating “need-blind” as a promise of easy admission.
  • Searching for an Amherst merit scholarship. It does not exist.

Who should apply, and who should not

Apply if you have top grades, a record of serious work outside class, and you want a small liberal arts college where you choose your own courses. Families with low or middle incomes gain the most, since Amherst can cover almost everything.

Think twice if you need a large university with professional schools, a defined engineering degree, or a merit scholarship based on grades alone. If your family can pay the full cost, aid will not change your bill, and you can weigh Amherst on academics only.
