Brandeis Wien International Scholarship 2027 (WISP): Eligibility, Coverage and Deadline

Brandeis Wien International Scholarship 2027 (WISP): Eligibility, Coverage and Deadline
The Brandeis Wien International Scholarship meets full demonstrated need for selected international undergraduates. There is no separate form: apply for admission and file the CSS Profile by 3 November 2026 or 15 January 2027.

The Brandeis Wien International Scholarship is a need-based undergraduate award at Brandeis University, near Boston, that meets each recipient’s full demonstrated financial need. It has funded students from around the world since 1958, more than 894 scholars from 115 countries so far, and it is renewable for up to eight semesters.

You do not fill in a Wien application. Brandeis chooses Wien Scholars from international students who apply for admission through the Common App or Coalition Application and submit the CSS Profile (code 3092) at the same time. For fall 2027 entry, the deadlines are 3 November 2026 for Early Decision I and Early Action, and 15 January 2027 for Early Decision II and Regular Decision.

Key facts about the Wien International Scholarship Program (WISP)

  1. University: Brandeis University, a private research university in Waltham, Massachusetts.
  2. Founded: 1958, by Lawrence A. and Mae L. Wien. The Wien family still supports it.
  3. Scholars so far: more than 894 from 115 countries.
  4. Coverage: full demonstrated financial need, based on a full review of your family’s finances.
  5. Selection: by the Brandeis Office of Admissions. Brandeis says it does not work with any outside person or organisation to choose Wien Scholars.
  6. Application: none separate. You are considered when you apply for admission and aid.
  7. Financial form: CSS Profile (code 3092), filed by the admission deadline.
  8. Renewal: up to eight semesters with continued need, satisfactory progress and the required GPA.
  9. Housing rule: Wien Scholars must live on campus or lose the housing and meals part of the award.

What the Wien Scholarship covers

The Wien award is sized to your need. Brandeis subtracts what your family can pay from the cost of attendance and the scholarship fills the rest. For a family that can pay very little, that means most of the cost; for a family with more income, the award is smaller.

Here are Brandeis’s estimated 2026-27 costs for an undergraduate living on campus. Brandeis labels them estimates pending board approval.

Cost item (2026-27, estimated)Amount
Tuition (full time)$73,080
Student activity fee$598
Housing (average on-campus)$13,180
Food (All Access +5 plan)$8,700
Books and supplies$1,000
Personal expenses$1,200
Health insurance (school plan)$4,700
International student fee$252 per semester
New student fee (international, first semester only)$635
TravelVaries

Tuition, the activity fee, housing, food, books and personal costs add up to $97,758. With health insurance, the total passes $102,000 before travel and the international fees.

How the package is paid

  • First semester: international students get grant money in place of a campus job, so the first bill is lower.
  • Later semesters: part of your package is an employment allotment. You earn it by working on campus; it is not taken off your bill in advance.
  • Year to year: under the Brandeis Commitment, students entering from fall 2026 keep the same total need-based grant each year, and it can rise by up to 3% (not more than the tuition increase). A big change in family finances triggers a new calculation.
  • Taxes: scholarship money above tuition, required fees and books can count as taxable income in the US.

Is Brandeis need-blind for international students?

No. Brandeis does not describe its international admission as need-blind. Its aid guides say international scholarships are “need-sensitive”, that competition for aid is strong, and that aid must be requested before admission. International students who do not receive aid when admitted cannot get it later.

That is the main difference between Brandeis and need-blind colleges such as Dartmouth, which our Dartmouth King Scholars Program guide covers. At Brandeis, asking for aid is part of the decision, so the strength of your application has to justify the cost to the university.

Who is eligible for the Wien Scholarship

You can be considered if:

  1. You are an international applicant (not a US citizen or permanent resident) applying for first-year undergraduate admission.
  2. You submit the CSS Profile and requested financial documents by your round’s deadline.
  3. You have strong academic results and real involvement in activities or your community.
  4. You show financial need.

Brandeis names “exceptional” academics and extracurricular or community work as the qualities it looks for. There is no country list and no income limit.

Eligibility edge cases

  • Students who do not apply for aid at first: they cannot apply for Wien or other scholarship money after admission.
  • Separated or divorced parents: file the Noncustodial Profile after the main CSS Profile.
  • UWC graduates: may also qualify for the Davis United World College Scholarship, $10,000 a year.
  • Students in Japan: may be considered for the Toshizo Watanabe International Scholarship, which covers tuition, housing, food and US health insurance.
  • Study abroad and off-campus living: Wien Scholars must live on campus or forfeit the housing and meals part.

Brandeis Wien Scholarship deadlines for fall 2027

Early Action3 November 20261 February 2027
Early Decision II15 January 202715 February 2027

Beware of Wien “agents”

Brandeis says it does not partner with any outside individual or organisation to select Wien Scholars. Anyone offering to get you a Wien Scholarship for a fee is not connected to Brandeis.

How to apply for the Brandeis Wien Scholarship

  1. Choose your round: ED I or EA (3 November 2026), ED II or RD (15 January 2027). Early Decision is binding.
  2. Apply through the Common App or Coalition Application: pay the $80 fee or request a fee waiver.
  3. Say you want financial aid: this puts you in the pool for Wien and other need-based scholarships.
  4. Complete the CSS Profile: add Brandeis with code 3092 and finish it by your deadline. Separated parents add the Noncustodial Profile.
  5. Upload supporting documents if asked: parents’ income proof (tax returns or official salary letters), bank or investment statements and business tax returns. Non-English papers need certified translations from a consulate, embassy or school official.
  6. Send English test results: TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Duolingo or Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, unless exempt.
  7. Record an interview: Brandeis strongly encourages international applicants to interview through InitialView or Vericant, by 15 November for ED I and by 15 January for ED II and RD.
  8. Track everything in DEISconnect: the Brandeis portal shows missing items and your decision.

How to stand out for a Wien Scholarship

Wien Scholars are chosen for academic achievement and for what they contribute in and outside the classroom. The programme’s stated purpose also includes engaging the whole campus in global citizenship. Your application should make both visible.

  1. Academic depth: top results, and one subject you have pushed past the syllabus.
  2. Community work with numbers: how many people, how many hours, what changed.
  3. A clear global angle: what you would share at Brandeis about your country or community.
  4. An interview that sounds like you: InitialView recordings let Brandeis hear your English and your ideas.

A sample essay opening (invented for illustration): “Our school library had 212 books when I started counting them. By the end of the year, after letters to three publishers and a book drive, it had 1,400, and a waiting list.”

Ask your counsellor and teachers to mention your community work by name, with numbers where they have them; it backs up what you claim in your activities list.

After you receive the Wien Scholarship

  • Renew every year: submit the CSS Profile and your parents’ prior-year income and asset documents by 1 March.
  • Keep your grades up: renewal needs satisfactory progress and the required GPA.
  • Live on campus: or you lose the housing and meals part.
  • Join the Wien community: current scholars come from countries such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Brazil, Indonesia and Pakistan, and Brandeis runs a Wien alumni network.
  • Appeals: if you think your award is wrong, Early Decision students appeal by 1 March and Regular Decision students by 15 April.

Costs the Wien Scholarship may not cover

  • The part of the cost your family is expected to pay, which depends on your CSS Profile.
  • Your campus job earnings from the second semester on.
  • Flights and the F-1 visa and SEVIS fees.
  • The $80 application fee and CSS Profile fees, unless waived.
  • Winter clothing and personal spending beyond Brandeis’s $1,200 estimate.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for admission before filing the CSS Profile. At Brandeis the aid deadline is the admission deadline.
  • Looking for a separate Wien application form.
  • Paying an “agent” who claims to place students in WISP.
  • Skipping the interview. Brandeis strongly encourages it for international applicants.
  • Applying Early Decision before checking that your family can accept a need-based offer.
  • Not reapplying by 1 March each year.

Who should apply, and who should not

Apply if you have excellent grades, a record of leadership or service you can describe with numbers, and a family that needs help with US costs. Brandeis suits students who want a research university close to Boston.

If your family can pay the full cost, the Wien award will not apply to you, since it is need-based. And if you need a guaranteed full scholarship before you can apply anywhere, add need-blind colleges and fully funded options to your list, because Brandeis’s aid is limited and competitive.
