JAMB CAPS 2026: How to Check Your Admission, Accept It, and Read Every Status

JAMB CAPS 2026: How to Check Your Admission, Accept It, and Read Every Status
How to check your admission on JAMB CAPS, accept or reject an offer by portal or SMS, handle Transfer Approval, and what each CAPS status means. Updated with the 2026 deadlines.

If a school has offered you admission this year, the offer lives on JAMB CAPS, and it stays an offer until you accept it there. Your school’s portal and the lists going round on WhatsApp mean nothing to JAMB until CAPS shows the same thing.

This guide covers getting into JAMB CAPS on a phone or a laptop, what each status message means, how to accept or reject an offer (including a course you never applied for), and what to do once you have accepted. Dates and fees sit in one table further down, checked against JAMB’s announcements as of 24 October 2026.

Public universities were told to finish their 2026 admissions by 31 October 2026. Private universities have until 30 November, and polytechnics, colleges of education and other institutions until 31 December. If your offer is from a public university and it is already showing, respond to it now.

What JAMB CAPS is

CAPS stands for Central Admissions Processing System. JAMB introduced it in 2017 so that every admission into a Nigerian university, polytechnic or college runs through one system. Your school recommends you on CAPS, JAMB approves the recommendation, and you accept or reject the offer on CAPS. Each step leaves a record.

Admission given outside CAPS is not recognised. At the 2026 policy meeting in May, the Minister of Education and JAMB repeated that admissions outside CAPS are illegal, and earlier in the year JAMB said it would stop handling complaints from candidates who were admitted that way. The same meeting warned schools against changing a candidate’s course without the candidate’s consent, which is why a course change now shows up on CAPS for you to approve.

CAPS has no separate website. It is a section of your JAMB e-Facility profile at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, the same account you used for your UTME result. If you have not checked your score yet, start with our guide on how to check your JAMB result and what to do with the score.

What you need before you log in

  • The email address and password you used at JAMB registration. Everything on CAPS hangs on this login.
  • Your JAMB registration number, which CAPS sometimes asks for after you select the exam year.
  • The phone that has the SIM you registered with, if you plan to accept by SMS.
  • Your O’level results uploaded to your JAMB profile. A school cannot move you forward on CAPS without them. Since August 2026, JAMB has allowed 2026 candidates to upload and verify O’level results online instead of going to a CBT centre.

How to check your admission status on JAMB CAPS

On a laptop or desktop the steps are short:

  1. Go to efacility.jamb.gov.ng and log in with your registered email and password.
  2. On your dashboard, click Check Admission Status.
  3. Select 2026 as the examination year and enter your registration number if the page asks for it.
  4. Click Access My CAPS.
  5. Open Admission Status from the menu to see your current status.

Checking CAPS on a phone

The CAPS pages were built for a desktop screen, and on many phones you see only a welcome message with no menu. That does not mean anything is wrong with your profile. In Chrome, tap the three dots at the top right and tick Desktop site, then go back to Check Admission Status. On an iPhone in Safari, tap the aA button in the address bar and choose Request Desktop Website.

What each JAMB CAPS status means

CAPS shows one of a handful of messages. The wording can vary slightly between screens, but these are the ones candidates see most often.

Status on CAPSWhat it meansWhat to do
Admission in progress / check back laterYour school is still processing its list, or has not submitted your name yet. It is not a rejection.Check every few days. Make sure your O’level results are uploaded.
RecommendedYour school has put you forward and JAMB has not approved it yet.Wait for approval. There is nothing for you to click.
Admitted / “Your admission has been approved by JAMB”The offer is live and waiting for your answer.Confirm the school and course, then accept or reject.
Transfer Approval (proposed transfer)Your school wants to offer you a different course from the one you chose.Respond under Transfer Approval first. See the section below.
Not admittedNo offer is on record for you for that year at the moment.Lists come out in batches, so this can change while schools are still admitting. Look at change of course or institution if your score suits another option.

Between 24 and 28 September 2026 the whole system was offline for about 96 hours because of a problem with its hosting arrangements, and JAMB asked schools to speed up afterwards to make up the lost time. If CAPS is slow or a page will not load, the system may simply be under strain. Try again later before assuming something has happened to your admission.

How to accept or reject admission on JAMB CAPS

When your status shows that you have been admitted, the Admission Status page gives you two buttons: Accept Admission and Reject Admission. Before you click either, read the institution, course and programme on the screen. It is easy to see the school name you hoped for and stop reading there.

Treat both buttons as final. Accepting makes that offer your admission on JAMB’s records. Rejecting releases the place, and guides that cover CAPS warn that a rejection cannot be reversed.

Do not let an offer sit. JAMB’s 2026 policy gives candidates four weeks to accept or reject, and an offer left unanswered past that can be withdrawn or given to another candidate.

Accepting or rejecting by SMS

If the website is giving you trouble, you can respond by text from the phone number you registered with. Send ACCEPT or REJECT to 55019 or 66019, and keep at least ₦100 of airtime on the line to be safe (JAMB does not publish the exact charge). Our JAMB CAPS SMS guide covers the message formats and what to do when the text fails. A message from any other number will not be processed.

Guides disagree on whether you also need to type your registration number before the word (for example, yourRegNumber ACCEPT). If the plain word does not work, follow whatever instruction is shown on your CAPS page. The SMS route only responds to an offer that already exists, so it will not tell you anything while you are still in progress.

During busy weeks some candidates have reported the SMS timing out. If that keeps happening, use the portal on a laptop, or go to an accredited CBT centre or a JAMB office. JAMB has also offered acceptance by fingerprint at those centres in recent years.

Should you accept?

If it is the course and school you wanted, yes, and do it the same day. If it is a course or school you would not choose, it is a harder call, and I would not leave it to the last day of the four weeks. Ask the school’s admissions office whether a better offer is likely before the deadline, and weigh the offer you have against a year of waiting. If no better offer is realistic, I would take the one in front of you.

When CAPS offers you a different course (Transfer Approval)

Sometimes a school cannot admit you to your first choice but will offer you another course, often because your score cleared the cut-off for one and not the other. On CAPS this appears under Transfer Approval, and you have to respond to it before you can accept the admission itself.

  1. Log in and go to Check Admission Status, then Access My CAPS.
  2. Open Transfer Approval in the menu.
  3. View the proposed transfer and check the new course carefully.
  4. Click Accept or Reject.

If you accept the transfer, the new course then has to show up under Admission Status, where you accept the admission as usual. That second step can take some days to appear while the school completes its side. If you reject the transfer, you stay on your original course, but nothing guarantees a place in it if the school has filled its quota.

Some schools also ask candidates to do a change of course on their JAMB profile so that every record matches. Ask your school’s admissions office whether yours does before you pay for it.

After you accept: what comes next

  • Print your JAMB admission letter. The option appears on your e-Facility dashboard only after you have accepted. The fee is ₦1,000, paid on the portal, and JAMB’s services page also lists a ₦100 charge where a CBT centre does the printing for you. Print in colour and keep several copies.
  • Pay your school’s acceptance fee on the school’s own portal. This is a separate step. Accepting on CAPS does not pay the fee, and paying the fee does not accept the offer on CAPS. You need both.
  • Prepare for clearance. Schools usually ask for the JAMB admission letter, your original UTME result slip, O’level results, birth certificate or declaration of age, and a local government identification letter. Your school’s own list is the one to follow.
  • Check the details on the letter. If your name, course or date of birth is wrong, correct it with JAMB before clearance. Only JAMB can change it.

Old offers from 2021 to 2025: the 30 November deadline

JAMB has been pushing candidates with unanswered offers from earlier years to clear them. It first set 31 August 2026 as the deadline, moved it to 30 September, and after the CAPS outage extended it again to 30 November 2026, which it has called the final deadline.

If you have an unanswered offer from 2021 to 2025, log in to CAPS and accept or reject it before then. After 30 November, any of those offers still untouched will revert to “Not Admitted” on JAMB’s records, and a later request to update the admission will attract a penalty fee.

If you have since been offered admission in 2026, JAMB has said you can reject the older offer and it will not affect your 2026 admission.

Keep in mind that 150 is the national floor. Your course at your school almost always has a higher departmental cut-off, especially for Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, Nursing and Engineering. Colleges of education and agriculture courses (outside engineering) no longer require the UTME from this year, but those candidates still register with JAMB and are verified through CAPS before admission letters are issued.

Common JAMB CAPS problems and fixes

You see only a welcome message on your phone. Switch the browser to desktop mode, as described above.

The Accept button is missing or greyed out. Your status is probably not “Admitted” yet, or a Transfer Approval is waiting for your answer first. Check the Transfer Approval tab.

Your status changed from admitted back to in progress. Candidates have reported this during busy periods while a school or JAMB is still processing. Give it a few days. If it does not settle within a week or so, visit a JAMB office with your registration documents.

You cannot get into your email. This usually happens when a cyber cafe created the address at registration. A JAMB office can help you regain access to your profile. Do it now rather than in the week your school’s clearance opens.

Someone offers to “speed up” or “secure” your CAPS admission for a fee. Nobody outside your school and JAMB can move a CAPS record, and the only genuine portal is efacility.jamb.gov.ng. In 2025 JAMB also warned that fraudsters were sending messages from look-alike short codes built around 55019, so treat any message asking you to call someone or pay to fix your profile as fake.

Frequently asked questions about JAMB CAPS

How do I check my JAMB CAPS admission status? Log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, select 2026, click Access My CAPS and open Admission Status.

Can I check CAPS with only my registration number? No. You need your e-Facility email and password to log in. The registration number is asked for after you are in.

Can I check my admission by SMS? The 55019 and 66019 codes are for responding to an offer that already exists. Use the portal to see your status.

How long do I have to accept? Four weeks from the offer under the 2026 policy, and less if your school’s own deadline comes first.

Can I undo a rejection? Treat it as permanent. Read the offer properly before you click.

I accepted on CAPS. Do I still pay the acceptance fee? Yes. The fee is paid to your school on its portal, separately.

My school’s portal says I am admitted but CAPS does not. Wait for CAPS. An admission that never appears there is not valid, whatever the school portal shows.

What happens to my unaccepted offer from 2023? Accept or reject it before 30 November 2026. After that it reverts to Not Admitted, and changing it later costs a penalty fee.
