Applications run through the UNIJOS online portal and cover Master’s, M.Phil/Ph.D., PhD and postgraduate diploma programmes across fifteen faculties, three centres and the Institute of Education. So is the bit the notice leaves out, which is a plain explanation of which degree route you should actually be applying for, and a list of the things the announcement never mentions. The notice is a catalogue, not an admission guide, and the gaps in it are what cost people their applications.

How to apply for UNIJOS postgraduate admission
Applications are submitted online through the UNIJOS application portal. Open the portal, select your programme, and complete the fields as they appear.
The step that trips people up is the selection itself. UNIJOS lists several fields under more than one degree route, so Psychology appears as an M.Sc., as an M.Phil/Ph.D. and as a postgraduate diploma. Choosing the wrong line is not something you can quietly fix in September, because your choice decides which admission committee reads your file and which entry requirements they measure you against. Read the exact programme title, then check it against the qualification you actually hold, before you fill in anything else.

Which degree route should you be applying for?
The notice lists four routes and explains none of them, which is a shame, because this is where most of the confusion lives. Here is what each route is generally for.
Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
A conversion year. It exists for candidates whose first qualification does not meet the entry standard for a Master’s, typically HND holders or graduates with a lower degree classification. Finish it well and you become eligible for the Master’s you originally wanted. UNIJOS lists PGD options in Education (PGDE), Technology Education (PGDTE), Psychology and Social Work.
Master’s (M.Sc., M.A., LL.M. and others)
The standard taught and research route for candidates holding a good first degree in a relevant field.
M.Phil/Ph.D.
The route that confuses everybody. In Nigerian universities this is generally an entry point for candidates whose Master’s does not quite meet the direct PhD requirement, often because of the grade, or because the Master’s carried little or no research component. You register on the M.Phil/Ph.D. track, and if your performance at the qualifying stage is strong enough, you convert to full PhD candidature. UNIJOS lists M.Phil/Ph.D. options in Economics, Psychology and Political Science.
PhD
Direct doctoral admission for candidates whose Master’s already meets the standard.
Confirm your own position with the School of Postgraduate Studies before you pay for anything, since the exact CGPA thresholds and conversion rules are set by the university rather than by any blog. Ask them plainly: with the degree and grade I hold, which route am I eligible for? That is a two minute phone call, and it saves people from applying to a PhD they were never going to be admitted to.

Psychology and Political Science are where candidates most often select the wrong line on the portal, because each field appears two or three times under different routes. Check the qualification you hold against the route before you click.
What the admission notice does not tell you
The published notice is a programme list with contact details attached. It does not state:
- The application fee
- The application deadline
- The entry requirements for each programme
- Whether NYSC discharge or exemption is required
- The screening or interview arrangements
- The admission list release date
- The tuition for any programme
Anyone publishing those figures with confidence right now is guessing, and postgraduate admission season attracts people who will take money to “process” an application they have nothing to do with. Get the deadline and the fee from the School of Postgraduate Studies directly, using the contacts below, and get them before you build any plan around a date somebody forwarded you.
The deadline is the urgent one. A postgraduate application takes weeks to put together properly, mostly because of documents you do not control, so not knowing the closing date means you are already behind on it.
Start collecting documents now, before the portal asks for them
Nigerian postgraduate applications generally require a set of documents that take time to obtain, and the transcript is almost always the bottleneck. Confirm the exact list with UNIJOS, but the usual set looks like this:
- Your first degree certificate or statement of result
- An official academic transcript, sent from your previous institution to the School of Postgraduate Studies
- Your O’Level results
- Your NYSC discharge or exemption certificate
- Academic referees, usually two, often from people who taught you
- A research proposal, for research degrees and most PhD applications
- Passport photographs and a valid means of identification
Order your transcript today, or at least this week. If you graduated from a Nigerian university some years ago, the transcript is the single most likely thing to arrive late and sink an otherwise strong application. Institutions differ wildly in how long they take, and a request that goes in the week before a deadline is a request that will not be honoured in time.
The referees deserve a similar warning. Lecturers are busy, and one who taught you six years ago will need reminding who you are. Ask them early, give them your transcript and a short note on what you are applying for, and follow up politely.
If your programme wants a research proposal, that is not a weekend job either. A weak proposal is the most common reason a technically qualified PhD applicant gets turned down.
Why postgraduate study at Jos
The admission announcement makes its case in the usual institutional register: experienced lecturers and researchers, modern facilities, a research-led environment. That is the university describing itself, which is what every university does in every notice ever written.
The programme list is the more useful signal. The Africa Centre of Excellence in Phytomedicine Research and Development is a real research unit with a real remit, and the Social Sciences listing has unusual depth, particularly in Psychology, where the department runs clinical, organisational, counselling and terrorism-psychology tracks. If your field sits on that list with genuine weight behind it, that tells you more than any adjective in the announcement.
Check for yourself before you commit to anything. Look up who teaches in the department, find out what they have published recently, and see whether anybody there works on the thing you want to spend years working on. For a research degree, your supervisor shapes your experience far more than the university’s general reputation ever will. Email the department and ask who supervises in your area. If nobody replies, that is worth knowing too.
Mistakes that cost candidates a place
Hardly any of the applications that fail are rejected on academic merit. They fail on process.
The wrong degree route is the classic. M.Sc. and M.Phil/Ph.D. are different things, and so are PhD and M.Phil/Ph.D., and the portal will let you choose whichever one you like.
Late transcripts are the cruellest, because the candidate usually did everything else right and simply asked their old university too late.
Some applicants never speak to a soul in the department, submit a research proposal that could have been written about any university in the country, and then sit in an interview unable to name a single person they would want to be supervised by.
And then there is the candidate who applied for the PhD when their grade only ever qualified them for the M.Phil/Ph.D. route. That one is painful because a two minute phone call, made before payment, would have caught it.

Before you open the portal
Almost everything that decides whether your application works happens away from the UNIJOS website.
Call the School of Postgraduate Studies this week and ask three plain questions: when does it close, what does it cost, and what are the entry requirements for the specific programme I want. While you are at it, request your transcript, because it will take longer to arrive than you expect and there is nothing you can do to speed it up once it is late. Then work out honestly which degree route your qualification actually places you in, so that the form you eventually fill is one you can be admitted from.
The programme list is public and the portal is open. The fortnight before you fill the form is where the application is really won.
